THE THIRD SORROWFUL MYSTERY

THE THIRD SORROWFUL MYSTERY

When saying the rosary, it’s common practice to reflect upon the mystery of that decade. Often times I will place myself as an onlooker within the scene. I would even sometimes be as bold as to speak to others there with me.

Today while reflecting on the Crowning of Thorns, I was walking through the Roman Praetorium and came upon the place where criminals are scouraged. As I neared the sandy pit, the roman soldier was giving the final lashings to a particular man. I noticed that this man had received more lashings than normal and the site of him was appalling. I asked a guard standing by who was snickering to himself what heinous crime did this man commit to receive such a punishment? His response was that the man claimed to be the King of the Jews.

We all know what happens next. Upon hearing this more roman soldiers will have some fun and continue to spit on him, mock him, and finally force a crown of thorns upon his head.

My point is, how often are we to make quick judgements of someone by just their title given to them? For the simple reason Jesus was given the title “King of the Jews” he was handed over a punishment that exceeded the worst crime. What comes to mind when we hear the word “beggar” or “illegal immagrant”? Or how about “CEO” and “politician”? Have we already settled with ourselves that we already know all we need to know about such a person before even meeting them or hearing their own story? Are we sometimes Roman soldiers to Christ?

THE FUTURE OF OUR CULTURE

THE FUTURE OF OUR CULTURE

This past weekend, Sharon and I went with a few friends to San Antonio for the Folklife Festival in San Antonio. There were groups representing various cultures that had settled and live in Texas. Among them were German, Cech, Chinese, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Panamanian, and many others (needless to say, Adam hung around the German booth most of the time eating sausage and bread pudding).

Also at the festival were many exhibits and demonstrations from the old days: wool processing, wood carving, wine making, etc. Seeing these things had me thinking: what will such festivals as this be like in 50 years? Will I be under one of these tents with a black box on my lap as the youngins watch me create these things called “web pages”? Or maybe the audience will marvel as I demonstrate an ancient form of communication by talking to another person through an electronic device… (I think it was called a cellular phone). In the afternoon, folks will sit by the road (the terrain version) and watch the parade of 4-wheeled vehicles drive by. “Yup, we used to have to actually maneuver these vehicles manually to keep from hitting one another!” I explain to my grandchildren.

It’ll happen, I wreckin’.

WORLD’S FIRST GLIMPSE OF BABY

WORLD’S FIRST GLIMPSE OF BABY G!

Life-size view

Today Sharon had her first appointment with the OB. Everything went great and baby and mother are healthy! Baby G is 1cm long and the heart was pumping away in the sonogram. Daddy couldn’t be any happier.

We had a little scare over the weekend. Being first-time parents we jump at every little change, so Friday Sharon and I went to see her general practictioner. Turns out what Sharon was experiencing is quite common among pregnant women in their first trimester. She was put to bedrest for the weekend. Unfortunately, this meant that we couldn’t go out Friday night to celebrate her birthday, so all our friends came to visit her and enjoyed cake and ice cream.

ST. JOHN BOSCO’S PROPHESY: A SIGN OF HOPE FOR OUR TIME

ST. JOHN BOSCO’S PROPHESY: A SIGN OF TODAY’S HOPE

I have recently been reflecting on the famous dream of St. John Bosco, my patron, regarding the great ship (you can read the original text here). Many of you are quite aware of this vision and it’s parallels to the life of today’s Church. In the dream the helmsman (the Pope) struggles to moor the great ship (Mother Church) to safety between the two columns of the Eucharist and Marian devotion. He is constantly under attack by much smaller ships and fighting the storms of the sea (persecutions and heresy). Twice during the dream, the helmsman meets with the captains (bishops) of smaller supporting ships (churches and dioceses). Each meeting (Vatican Councils I and II) takes place during a lull and is followed with a fierce attack. During the turmoil, the helmsman is gravely wounded twice, the second time taking his life. Many believe that the first attack was the foretelling of the assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981.

So in light of these parallels in time, where does John’s prophesy put us today?

Well, if what we have already established is true, then our holy father will suffer once again at the hands of our enemy, this time taking his life. Do I think this means he will suffer a violent death? Not necessarily. His heart already suffers so much under the separation of the Church, which since the beginning of his pontificate he has striven to reunite. With news of his parkinson’s disease and his own mentioning of his preparation to stand before God, we cannot but except that his time with us here on earth is coming to a close.

However, great things await his passing. For according to the dream that “…hardly is the Pontiff dead than another takes his place. The pilots, having met together, have elected the Pope so promptly that the news of the death of the Pope coincides with the news of the election of the successor. The adversaries begin to lose courage.” The new Pope immediately recognizes the columns, recently brought to light by his predecessor with the apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae and the encyclical letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia. “The new Pope, putting the enemy to rout and overcoming every obstacle, guides the ship right up to the two columns and comes to rest between them,” fastening the ship tight with chains. It’s at this moment “a great convulsion takes place”.

“All the ships that until then had fought against the Pope’s ship are scattered; they flee away, collide and break to pieces one against another. Some sink and try to sink others. Several small ships that had fought gallantly for the Pope race to be the first to bind themselves to those two columns. Many other ships, having retreated through fear of the battle, cautiously watch from far away; the wrecks of the broken ships having been scattered in the whirlpools of the sea, they in their turn sail in good earnest to those two columns, and having reached them, they make themselves fast to the hooks hanging down from them and their they remain safe, together with the principal ship, on which is the Pope. Over the sea there reigns a great calm.”

I think what we’ll witness is those who have remained faithful to the Catholic Church and fought beside her will rush and cling to the Blessed Sacrament and our most Blessed Mother, whose eyes have constantly been upon. Those who stood by, whether as neutral or in somewhat of agreement will eventually do the same. Could this be a possible divination of the unity of the Christian faith among all denominations!?! Only then will there be the great calm among Christ’s people. God bless you.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

We’ve had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. The Shearer’s arrived Friday evening. Saturday morning we held a baby shower for Elizabeth. Many people came and enjoyed a late morning meal of waffles, a round of baby shower games, and gift opening. Baby Gabriel wishes to thank everyone for the many presents. He can’t wait to join the world and enjoy them!

That evening the four of us made a trip to Houston to see the Chicago Cubs play the Astros. Andrew was thankful to finally see a Cubs game with a fellow fan. He said it was nice for a change to exchange high-fives instead of trash talk. Needless to say it was a great game. With 1st place on the line between the two teams, the Cubs overcame the Astros 3-2!

Sunday after mass we had more friends over and cooked out on the grill. Nice job on the fajitas Adam! Following ice cream we played a round of Cranium. Andrew, Mark, and Julie just squeezed out a win after Adam, Sharon and Lupe made a strong comeback. We demand a rematch. That evening we enjoyed take-out from Rudy’s and jumped back in time to the 80s with “Back to the Future.” What a classic movie.

Andrew, Elizabeth, and Gabriel headed home this morning after pancakes. We wish them save travels and hope to see them soon again.

What did you do Sunday

What did you do Sunday for the Pope’s birthday????
We had our little Pope party…complete with Italian cream cake! Instead of watching a Pope video, we played a game our friend Julie brought—Catholic Trivia!!! Wow! What fun and it was just perfect to play for the people who showed up. It was funny the game was made in 1983! And we had a great mix of Catholics here of all ages!! Turns out the host and hostess were in a dead heat for first….but alas Sharon let Adam win! Honorable mentions go to Zvezdana and Shannon. –And Menisha because she kept getting the really hard questions. :)

Sharon got a job with American Youthworks as a curriuculum writer. The nice thing is that the funding for this position runs out end of January…which coincides arrives with a certain little bundle of joy! :) She starts tomorrow. She nervous…She cried for about half an hour on Adam yesterday. You see…Sharon makes him lunch everyday and takes it to him at work and she’s not going to be able to do that anymore. :( (
So pray for her please.

Oh and little baby Gretencord is growing. On Thursday baby turned 21 days—and you know what that means! A heart beat!!!
Please pray for the continued good health of baby and mother…and also the other expecting couples in our lives, Elizabeth and Andrew; Menisha and Dominic; and Sara and Joseph.

More good news to share.

More good news to share. Sharon got a job! She will be working with American YouthWorks as a curriculm writer. The grant for her project ends in January 2004, so it works quite well with her pregnancy.

This morning is our 21 1/2 day of pregnancy, which means that last night in our sleep, our baby’s heart beat for the first time.

We have some great news…

We have some great news… We’re pregnant! Sharon took the pregnancy test last Thursday. Adam could hardly believe the results that he made Sharon take it two more times! (Those tests actually do work!) We’re estimating the due date to be around mid- late-January 2004. Sharon will know more when she has her first doctor’s appointment early next month.

May 18th will be the Pope’s 83rd birthday. So, of course we’re going to celebrate! Come on out to our house Sunday at 3:00pm. If you’d like to come, let Sharon know and if you can bring a small dessert. We’ll bake the birthday cake! We’re going to try to find a good Pope video. So if you have some suggestions or a video/DVD, let us know when you RSVP. Happy Birthday Holy Father!

So you’ve been checkin’ up

So you’ve been checkin’ up on us, eh?

Well, it’s been over three months since our wedding and we’re long overdue for a relaunch. So, think of this is as a sneak preview. We’ve had a lot of requests for pictures of our new home, stories of our honeymoon, and plans for the future. Take a deep breath, because it’s all coming.

Right now, we are both very busy. Adam is working on completing three other sites and preparing two boys clubs for the summer. Sharon is actively looking for a new job and getting further and further involved with the Office of Respect Life. So, this site will be updated in our “spare time.”

We’re looking forward to a lot of new stuff for the site. Photo albums, a blog, mini-sites, and a calendar just to name a few. If you have any suggestions, send ‘em on.

In the meantime, let us know how you’re doing and keep in touch.
