Birthday Talent Show

Every year for Adam and my birthdays we always come up with a theme.  People come to expect this from us now.  Yesterday we celebrated my birthday and the theme was a Talent Show–and the prize was a pint of homemade chocolate gelato.  We had a blast!  And yes, we had a friend record it.

Here were the gifts our friends shared with us:

Adam and I: Using a puppet theater and veggies, we acted out the Hairbrush Song –a Silly Song by Larry. (Think Veggie Tales)

The Devman:  Juggling–and he’s really good too.  He was a crowd favorite…but he left early so he missed out on the gelato. We’ll do a raincheck.

The Lemmons:  Alan and Emily had a frog call competition.  (They’re biologist who study frogs.)  Alan also made us some homemade salsa–it was very good.  And Emily showed us some of the frogs they are raising for her research for Ph.D. disertation.  As another crowd favorite they got to take home the gelato.

Julie and Zvezdana:  Christmas in May.  These two talented voices sang three Christmas song–in harmony!

The Hebdas:  A dramatic interpretation of The Very Hungry Catapiller by Eric Carle.  They included their 3 three children; it was very original and creative.  As another crowd favorite we promised them the gelato next time they have us over for dinner.

The Whites:  Nikolas read me a norweigen birthday poem and Katherine (9 months old) played a Little Tykes piano with her feet…with some help from mom.

Mark:  His stand up show used all the guest names in puns!  This takes some sharp skill.  He came up as another favorite. So I’ll make him some gelato too.

The Dobson:  or shall I say Alexis and Ryan the Aggies!  Decked out in their Aggie attire, they educated the crowd on some Aggie yell traditions.  My “hook’em” slipped a couple of times but they were forgiving.  They had really good audience participation!

The Ceys:  Brad sang us the “Eyes of Texas.” That was a good follow-up to the Aggie traditions.  Misty sang me “Happy Birthday” in French!

Greg: shared his fine culinary skills with us in a casserole and yummy dip.

Thanks for sharing your creativity and talents with me!  It really made for a Happy birthday.

“In Heaven”

Today while we were playing, Therese took out her Little People nativity scene.

Me:  Where’s Mary?

Therese:  In Heaven (*with arms wide open and a look that said ‘duh mommy.’*)

Blessed Mother’s Days

First of all, a blessed Mother’s Day to all moms out there.

I had a fabulous couple of Mother’s Days this weekend.  On Saturday, Adam had daddy-daughter time with Therese while Fulton and I went to a retreat given by the Alexander House on the Dignity of Women.  I think it is very true that the Holy Spirit calls certain people to retreats to hear something profound that will touch their lives.  I found myself at one point in tears as I was contemplating God’s love for me realizing why I had been called there.  It was one more affirmation that I need to do something that He’s been calling me to do for the last 6 months, but I’ve been too stuborn to start!

When my sweet huband and daughter picked us up, they had my favorite flowers waiting for me–Gerber Daisies–and a box of yummy Austinuts!  Never one to miss an opportunity to obtain just a little more grace, Adam planned for us to go to confession.  Then we went to Mass, crowing a very holy day for me.

Today, Adam cooked me a yummy breakfast.  Afterward, half-joking, I asked Adam, “Where’s my card?”  He was already writing the URL to the card he made me before I finished my question.  I ran up and watched it…he had video taped the kids and himself wishing me a happy Mother’s day!  And once again I found myself in tears thankful for the love God has sent me through my husband!

Then we were off to San Antonio to meet up with my parents and sister.  We had brunch and piddled around.  I won $15 off of a scratch-off Lotto ticket my sister gave me.  The kids had fun visiting with grandma, grandpa and aunt nana.

Lord, thank you for the husband that has made me a mother..  and thank you for the mother that has shaped my motherhood…and give me the grace to have Your mother always praying for me and You always in my heart!

“God or the Girl”–conclusion

If you haven’t seen the show or do not want to know the end results (and our opinions), stop reading here.

We watched the last two episodes last night. We were not generally surprised with the end results.

Joe, to his own admission, is an attention seeker. I think that’s how he ended up on the show. He never really showed signs of wanting to become a priest outside of his mom’s expectations of him to become a priest. Although the pilgrimage was probably a good learning experience, it didn’t seal his fate as a priest. I didn’t think it would, but we were hopeful. Adam was once told that a man who would make a good husband, would make a good priest and vice versa. It didn’t seem that Joe is emotionally mature enough to be either…yet. He has a lot of growing and soul searching to do still.

Dan…at one point Adam and I both shook our heads and said, “oh, Dan.” In episode 4 he was confronted by an envangelical fundamentalist who challenged his faith. It would have been SO AWESOME if Dan could have answered this guy’s attack of the Catholic Church. But alas, Dan could not. Then at long last, “the girl” was introduced into the picture. It was a relief, that he announced he was postponing his discernment. Although, at the 6 month re-visit, he was back with the girl. We pray that he listens to a little bit of Tim Staples, Jesse Romero, or Scott Hahn! With a little apolgetics under his belt, he’s going to be an even better youth minister!

Way to go Steve! When we saw that he was going to announce his decision to his parish, Adam said, “I don’t think the priest would let him get up there and say, ‘I’ve decided not to become a priest and eventually marry a person I haven’t met yet.’” That would be silly wouldn’t it! His was a great story of discernment. My personal opinion is that he had the best priests guiding him. Every priest I know from a county south of the US, has a special way of saying what you need to hear and having the perfect and most humble way of conveying their message. Fr. Jorge was no exception. God bless Steve in his vocation!

“God or the Girl”

After petitioning a few people to record the 5 part series on A&E, “God or the Girl,” we finally sat down to start watching it this week.  We still have two episodes left to watch.

So far, I have quite liked it.  Adam has an issue with the fact that not once in the first three episodes has the term VOCATION been mentioned.  Most Catholics do not know what VOCATION means, so I’m not surprised that it is a term that has been avoided.  The only other thing that I find silly is the fact that the commentator continues to say that these young men only have “one week left” to decide.  In “reality” they don’t.  But other than that….

I like that they are portraying these devout Catholic young men and their real struggles.  It is not easy to discern the call of your vocation.  I still remember when Adam was discerning his vocation while we were dating.  We were not at all surprised when Mike chose his teaching job and his girlfriend.  It was awesome to hear them talking about living chastely before marriage.  It is not a loss for the priesthood as there is an equal need for holy husbands that will witness to the faith.

I like Dan, the Fort Zion youth minister that literally was sent to carry his cross.  It’s so excellent that they showed the youth praying at the abortion clinic!  Rock on!  When his spiritual director told him to literally carry a cross 22 miles to a neighboring parish, Adam remarked, “what’s the point in that!?”  Penance dear…penance.  I simply said, “Remember, St. Catherine of Siena would ‘discipline’ herself with chains and St. Francis used a rock as his pillow.”

Steve is an interesting character as well.  Adam thinks he’ll go to seminary as Steve has made a huge sacrifice already giving up his job, money, and cushy lifestyle.  I’m interested to see the next episode when he’s in Guatemala.  I think it’ll seal the deal.  It takes great humility to admit yourself unworthy and afraid.

Joe…Joe needs to resolve issues with his mom.  He’s on his pilgrimage to the Carmelite retreat house near Niagra falls.  I think it interesting that he has chosen to live as the poor and homeless.  We’ll see what becomes of the remaining three.

Biking

Trek 7200 FXSo I’m now an official Austinite — I own a bicycle. Since I’m no longer able to play basketball during my lunch hour, I needed a new form of exercise. Others have suggested going for a run after work. I hate running. Fitness activities that have no score or opposing teams drive me nuts. Oh sure you can play the beat-my-personal-best-time-around-the-block game or argue that the few extra inches around the gut is the competition, but that’s boring and offers no immediate satisfaction. Do I sound like a member of modern society or what? The last time I was serious about running was when I was in San Francisco. One parish a few blocks away had an early morning mass and for extra graces another church a couple miles across town had early morning mass AND confession… daily! Now that was motivation.

“So doesn’t riding a bike fall into the same category as running?” you may be asking yourself. It would except one important overriding detail: you use a machine to make you go fast. That makes it all worthwhile.

So after testing the route with acceptable results on Sunday, I made the commute home this evening after work. It’s about a 7.5 mile trek each way, which wouldn’t be all too bad minus the steep hills coming home. I’m not afraid to admit that I have to foot-it on a few grades. Not even the “granny gears” can get me up the incline off of 360. But in the “spirit of beating my personal best” I’ll keep trying.
