The Dignity of Work

John Paul II wrote, “Work is a way to self-fulfilment, through the growth and development of the potential and abilities which are acquired by training, experience and concrete activity.”

We often underestimate the power of work and the scope of how we work.  Adam works very hard for our family using his training and experience in software development.  But he also gets on-the-job training as husband and father when we comes home to me and our children.  My work raising our children and managing our home is not easy.  With Therese’s third birthday just around the corner in a few months, I decided she needs to learn the value of work.  I, as the manager of our home, have the responsiblity of training her with concrete activities and experiences.

To make this concrete for her, she has a chore sheet.  It has picture of the things she needs to do like, set the table, put away the flatware, pick up her toys, vacuum, etc.  Whenever she does a chore she gets a sticker.  When she fills the page, she will get a small reward like a toy or video.  I wasn’t sure how this would go off, but so far so good. She loves it!  And not just the sticker part.  She loves the praise and feeling that she’s contributing to the work in our home.

Thank you Lord for just a good little helper.  Help Therese and Fulton to find dignity and self-fullfillment in their work as your children and ours.

A RULE OF LIFE

for Those Consecrated to the Immaculate Virgin,
by Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe

It is my duty to be a saint and a great saint.
For the glory of God, I must save myself and all souls, present and future, through the Immaculata.

Before anything else flee not only from mortal but also from deliberate venial sin.

Do not permit: a) that evil remains without reparation and destruction, or b) that good be without fruit or increase.

Let your rule be obedience — the will of God through the Immaculata — I am nothing but an instrument.

Think of what you are doing. Do not be concerned about anything else, whether bad or good.

Preserve order, and order will preserve you.

Peaceful and benevolent action.

Remember that you belong exclusively, unconditionally, absolutely, irrevocably to the Immaculata: Whoever you are, whatever you have or can have, whatever you do (thoughts, words, action) and endure (pleasant, unpleasant, indifferent things) belong to the Immaculata. Consequently, may She dispose of them according to Her will (and not yours). In the same way all your intentions belong to Her; therefore, may She transform them, add others, take them away, as  She likes (in fact, She does not offend justice). You are an instrument in Her hand, therefore do only what She wants; accept everything like a child to his own mother, trust Her in everything. Take an interest about Her, Her veneration, Her things and let Her take care of you and your loved ones. Recognize that everything you have comes from Her and nothing from you. All the fruits of your activities depend on the union with Her, in the same way as She is an instrument of the divine mercy.

St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe

Raymond Kolbe’s life changed the day his mother asked, “What will become of you?”

“I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me.  She appeared holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red.  She asked if I would like to have them–one was for purity, the other for martyrdom.  I said, ‘I choose both.’  She smiled and disappeared.”  Raymond’s life was never the same.  He became Fr. Maximilian Maria Kolbe of the Franciscan Conventual Friars and founded the Knights of the Immaculata (or the Militia Immaculata, MI). The mission of the MIs is to win souls to Christ through the Immaculata!  You will often find MIs wearing the Miraculous Medal or leaving these spiritual bullets in convenient places to be found by souls entrusted to Our Blessed Mother! :)

St. Maximilian Pray for us that we may become saints–great saints!

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and for those who do not have recourse to thee especially the enemies of the Church and those recommended to thee.

All for the Immaculata!

p.s. Happy name day to Sr. Maria Kolbe!

Happy Anniversary

I want to wish my parents a very happy 40th anniversary today!  We had a mini-family reunion with my family in Victoria at my grandmother’s house.  It was the first time in my family (siblings and their families included) have been to my grandmother Ramona’s house all at the same time.  We had a lovely time and she looked better than I’ve seen her in years.

So it looks like 2007 is going to be an awesome year for the kid in heart. Thought I’d post a few of the coming releases as the list is starting to get too long for memory.
