The Wedding Feast of Cana
Today’s Mass reading is of the Wedding Feast of Cana. It’s one of my favorites and not only because is was our reading for our own wedding feast four years ago.
The best reflection I’ve read of the Wedding Feast of Cana was written by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in his book, The World’s First Love: Mary Mother of God. Sheen reflects on the exchange between Jesus and his Mother and how it would change both their lives for him to begin his public ministry at that time. When his “hour” comes, so does hers. When he undertakes the salvation of mankind, she is not long just his mother, but the mother of all he redeems.
Sheen also gives us lessons to take from the wedding feast.
“The first lesson from Cana is: ‘Aid yourself and Heaven will aid you.’ … We must not expect God to transform us without our bringing something to be transformed…
The second lesson of Cana is that Mary intercedes to gain us what we need, without our always knowing our needs. “
