Divine Mercy Sunday

We missed wishing you a blessed Divine Mercy Sunday yesterday. We took a trip down with our friends the Lemmons to the Mission of Divine Mercy for their feast day Mass. It was awesome!

The Mission is located northwest of New Braunfels near Canyon Lake in the middle of the woods. I’m glad we followed the Lemmons down because I don’t think we would have been able to find it on our own. The outdoor chapel was atop a hill and the day was just perfect! The chapel has a ceiling but is short three walls. The woods were our cry room. ;)

The community consists of a priest (Fr. John Mary), a brother soon-to-be-deacon (Brother Moses), two nuns (Sr. Magdaline and Sr. Amapola) and one lay consecrated (Maria Felicitas). After the Mass they instituted their first Laici Christi (their lay movement)–when Therese asked who they were, I just said Jesus’ helpers. The Lemmons introduced us to all the community and they were all so friendly and lovely people!

The final part of the service gave us an opportunity to venerate the image of Divine Mercy while we sang the chaplet. What a blessed day!

Just how many guys does it take

…to remove an oil filter from a Scion xB? Apparently at least two, and they must be equiped with a lot of tools. I have never dealt with such a stubborn filter in all my years of car maintenance experience. This was my first attempt at changing the xB’s oil after we had exhausted our three complimentary oil changes from the dealer.

I first tried loosening it by hand – which is really as tight as it needs to be – without success. Naturally, I then reached for my oil wrench to only soon discover that it was just slightly larger than the filter. I then knew I would need assistance.

I trotted over to the neighbors to ask Chris if he had a smaller wrench. What he had was an adjustable rubber strap wrench. Perfect. Or so I thought until the strap started slipping with each turn. We considered a few other tools we had on hand – channel locks, pipe wrench, rubber mallet – but there simply wasn’t enough room underneath the vehicle to maneuver these devices. Chris remembered that his grandfather once had success with this devilish device, so we made a quick run to AutoZone. $7 and 5 minutes later, the results were the same.

We then knew we had reached the point of no return.

With a mallet in hand and my approval, Chris drove a long screwdriver through the heart of that filter and the black liquid poured forth. Using the added leverage, we gave it another attempt to turn that thing free. No success. My heart sank. This was serious trouble. Following a quick prayer to our Lord, an idea come forth.

My friend once again grabbed the tool-of-terror, rammed one of the teeth into the filter’s fresh wound, pressed hard against it, and turned with all his might.

It gave away. It turned freely. It was off.

I can’t tell you how tempted I am to take this thing to the dealer and ask if this is the way all their filters look after they’re done with them.

They fit!!!

The question that has been plaguing us since we found out we were pregnant again is what to do about the car. Would three carseats fit safely? We really like the Scion. It’s economical and efficient. Getting another car would mean selling this one and getting a much larger vehicle that guzzles lots in gas.

Adam needed to change the oil today and wanted to know whether he should buy just enough for this change or a whole case…I replied it all depends on whether the third carseat fits. So what do you think?

It’s not a perfect fit. It’s very snug. There’s absolutely no wiggle room. But it may get us by until after Adam has his jaw surgery or have yet another baby.

Roses

Our roses are in full bloom! Last year Mom Gretencord sent me the yellow roses that are in the pot on the right. It was just a wee little plant not more than 6 inches tall. I planted them right away and they just took off. I think someone once said that flowers sent with love will last a long time…thanks mom!

Mission of Divine Mercy

In case you’re willing to travel to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday.

There will be a Divine Mercy Mass at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mission of Divine Mercy in New Braunfels. Our friends the Lemmons have told us great things about this community and we’ll be joining them on Sunday there. They also mentioned they are very child friendly and if you plan on going, dress weather appropriate as the new chapel does not have walls yet.

Hope to see you there!

Baby G update

Well, Baby G is a shy little one. It took quite some poking and proding this morning to find his/her heartbeat. But alas, thanks be to God, the nurse found it. I’m still on my progesterone shots. My next blood test is Tuesday and if my levels stay “normal” then my hips will be eternally grateful! We have an ultrasound scheduled in about three weeks. We won’t spoil all the fun by finding out the gender of Baby G. Hopefully we’ll just see that s/he is growing healthy and strong as it should be.

First fruits

Well, our first tomato WAS growing….until a little critter ate it! Probably the same little critter that has been digging up baseball size holes in our garden.

Of course you know this means WAR!

…to be continued…

How Does Our Garden Grow?

Overall quite well. It seems to have survived the recent drop in temperatures, although the tomatoes (wrapped in towels) are showing signs of weakness. We may have to replant if they don’t recover soon. Can’t complain about those runner beans. I had a bit of time this afternoon to errect the trellis as a couple of the plants couldn’t wait another day for something to start climbing. The peas are coming strong while the lettuce is taking its time. It’ll probably be another week before I find time – and another location – for the squash and cucumbers.
