Texas Mountain Laurels

The one great thing about this time of year is that our Texas Mountain Laurels – or more precisely Texas Mescalbean – come into bloom.

People regularly compare the strong scent of the flower to kool-aid. Personally I recall childhood memories of stuffing my mouth with a wad of grape-flavored Big League Chew.

    I love these flowers, too; would you believe that the mountain laurel’s nectar (which bees gather and make into honey) contains compounds that is poisonous to people?
