A Blue Bell Birthday!

So yesterday was the 8th anniversary of my 25th birthday.  We took a trip out to the Blue Bell Creamery where Blue Bell ice cream is made.

First we went on the tour…complete with hats!

I think the kids would agree that the best part of the tour…the ice cream at the end.

Down the street about 8 miles is the Monastery of St. Clare.  They raise and sell miniature horses.  There are only 4 sisters in the order. The oldest is in her 90s. The youngest, Sister Angela is in her 50s.

It was a wee warm outside and the kids were content playing on the fake horses inside.

The Priest Game

Adam’s mom sent us a new game last week: The Priest Game.

All in all it is a great game!  We’ve played it every day since it came in the mail. The kids LOVE it and ask to play everyday.  I’m sure part of their love for the game is that Fr. Tim is on one of the cards.  One of the kids asks to be Fr. Tim every time we play. Consequently, his card is on Eucharistic processions and it was a great introduction to the Eucharistic procession we attended last weekend.

So there are 6 double-sided playing cards–12 possible playing cards but only 6 people can play at a time.  Each side has either a color (black, brown, rose, purple, green, red, white, blue, gold) or an office of the holy orders (such as deacon and bishop) and there is one card on the 7 sacraments. On each of these cards are numbered 8 different pictures of things associated with card which have smaller corresponding picture cards to go with it. The picture cards match the pictures on the larger card and on the back of them have a description of the picture and/or a “Did you know…” or a prayer or a “Can you find..?”.

For example, Fr. Tim’s is a blue card (for Mary, of course) on Eucharistic processions and on it is a picture of him in the surplice he’d wear, a picture of a Eucharistic procession (him holding the monstrance under a canopy), the cope, candles, banners, a hymnal, and the censer and boat.  So you spin the spinner and you put the picture card on the large card of the number you spin.  Everyone takes a turn and the “winner” is the first person to fill their card.

There are many things I love about this game… First, it’s a great teaching tool on our priests and the Mass.  Every thing that is used in the Mass or by our priests is on one of the cards with beautiful pictures and the proper names and simple descriptions that even Therese can understand.  I have certainly learned quite a few things.  Even my beloved husband who is an installed acolyte has learned a thing or two from this game.  The prayers, especially those for our priests are lovely and a great encouragement to pray for them.  As an aside, knowing some of the priests pictured on the game has added another special dimension–the cards they are on (such as Fr. Tim with the blue Eucharistic procession card–knowing how much he loves and draws strength from our Blessed Mother and the Eucharist and is always leading others to them), and the prayers on their cards say so much about their personality and life.  In addition, the game comes with a 3 part DVD on the Mass Explained that Fr. Tim did for his television show, “Inspired by This Confidence.”  One of my favorite parts of this DVD is when he explains the prayers the priests prays as he is vesting himself for Mass.  It gave me an even more profound love and respect for the priesthood.

My “not favorite” part of the game is that there are 96 picture cards and keeping them sorted so that it doesn’t take half an hour just for find the pictures cards for 3 players.  I ended up putting them in separate envelops to keep them organized.  We haven’t really done the “Can you find..?” part of the game because some of the cards that are being cross referenced are not in our immediate playing circle and I don’t want to disorganize the other cards.  I think having all 96 cards out at one time would be a nightmare for the age and attention span of our kids (2 and 4 years old).  But as I said, I haven’t tried it and it might not be that bad.

The kids would agree, it’s a “two thumbs up” game.

Eucharistic Procession 2008

Yesterday the Gretencord family partook in the Austin Diocese’s Eucharistic Procession – which Thérèse had just learned is “a walk with Christ”. We arrived at the Seton Williamson hospital chapel shortly before the end of mass to join the start of the procession. The Almon’s were gracious enough to lend the kids their umbrellas to ward off the hot sun and push are “caravan” of strollers.

Soon our Blessed Lord appeared and the procession began.

ep2008_start.jpg

It was a hot and humid afternoon but with plenty of water and layers of sunblock we faired quite well. It was a 3.3 mile walk to St. John Vianney. The crowd consisted mostly of young Hispanic people who were busying themselves handing out water, praying, and singing. It was a very joyous occasion.

After about 2 hours we arrived at the church and were greeted by Bishop Aymond. He took the monstrance into the church and continued with benediction.

We were happy to hear the bishop call for more Eucharistic Processions to begin taking place at the parish level. Let’s pray that our beloved priests will answer his call!

Corpus Christi Celebration

This Sunday, the feast of Corpus Christi (the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ).  The Diocese will have a Eucharistic procession and benediction in Round Rock. Mass is at 3 p.m. at the chapel in Seton Medical Center Williamson. A three-mile walking procession will lead to St. John Vianney Parish for the benediction at 6 p.m.

We hope to see you there!

Feast of St. Paschal Baylon

Today is the feast of St. Paschal.

“Meditate well on this: Seek God above all things. It is right for you to seek God before and above everything else, because the majesty of God wishes you to receive what you ask for. This will also make you more ready to serve God and will enable you to love him more perfectly” (St. Paschal).

St. Paschal had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and is the patron saint of cooks.

A great book for kids is: Pascual and the Kitchen Angels by Tomie dePaola.    It’s one of our favorites. :)

Adam Raccoon

Adam Raccoon My parents handed down to me a couple of books from my childhood. Glen Keane had written and illustrated a series of children books that help explain Biblical truths. What makes these stories so fun are the central characters: the wild and zany Adam Raccoon and the wise and loving lion, King Aren. The stories themselves sometimes retell parables from the Bible and at other times simply convey good morals. The books read like cartoons, the illustrations are brilliant, and they make it easy to discuss lesson learned at the end.

My kids just adore these books and Sharon and I couldn’t be happier. They are no longer in print but you can find plenty of used in like-new condition from Amazon (few listed below) or AbeBooks.com. We just recently purchased three more and the smiles we received from Thérèse and Fulton as soon as they recognized that furry mammal on the cover just reaffirmed that these are definitely a worthwhile investment.

Strawberry Picking

These are a little late in posting, but we had so much fun I had to share.  We took an outing with the Cey girls last month.  We managed to pack all of us in the van! (woohoo!)  Here are some of the highlights.

Walk 2008

It’s coming up on that time of the year.  The Texas Alliance for Life Walk 2008 will be upon us next month.  I’d humbly like to ask for your support again. Last year we raised over $3000 under Therese’s name.  We’d be grateful for any support you can give us to reach our goal of $1000.

To that end, I’d like to invite you to join our family at the Texas Alliance for Life 14th Annual Walk 2008 on June 7 at the Quarries, Austin. We’ll be walking with hundreds of Texans from dozens of churches to promote the sanctity of innocent human life and to raise funds for life-saving programs and agencies in our community.

100% of the proceeds will support these programs and agencies, and all donations are taxdeductible.

If you can’t walk with us, please sponsor us (under Therese’s name). You can register as a Walker or a Sponsor at www.texasallianceforlife.org.

For the out-of-staters, you can still sponsor us.  States that promote and adopt pro-life legislation and win court cases in upper levels of judicial courts (like Texas has done)  have a huge impact on other states.  And a life saved and nurtured in Texas is another soul for God and His kingdom!

An Early Gift

I told myself the best gift I could get for my birthday this month was a potty trained 2 year old.   And my little Fulton came through!

In two weeks, he was by leaps and bounds easier to potty train than Therese.  It could be the Montessori  techniques I used, or the extra patience that our blessed Lord granted me, or his easy going nature, or the  extra family rosaries we offered for this.  Whatever it was…Thank you, Jesus!

I think I actually enjoyed potty training during this round.  God gave me a little grace to look at the whole situation as time to spend one-on-one with our little guy.  I often wonder how parents with multiple children get to spend time individually with each child.  Well, now I know one way. I think it did Fulton a lot of good not to have big sister around during this time, and to enjoy mom or dad reading to just him.  I think it did me some good too.
