Post Surgery Day 2

Adam is doing really well today. He did a little bit of walking and sitting in a chair. He was awake for the most part with a short afternoon nap.

We had a good visit with Dr. Quaroni tonight. Because I wasn’t sure, I asked what exactly was holding Adam’s jaw together. Answer: Titanium plates and about 30 screws! I guess he’ll be making the metal detectors at airports go off for the rest of his life. Dr. Quaroni is very pleased with the progress that Adam is making. In fact, Dr. Q said, “You don’t even look like you had jaw surgery yesterday.” To which I replied, “Well, we had a whole convent of nuns praying for this surgery!” Thank you Sister of Mary! And thanks again to all of you for your prayers!  Adam is doing so well because of heaven and our Blessed Lord have been flooded with your prayers!

If he has a good night tonight, Adam will be able to come home tomorrow!

First sips

Dr. Quaroni came by this evening to check in on Adam. Since the two previous times I’ve met with him, I have never seen him smile so much! I think he is well please with the work God did through his hands! So are we!

Adam is doing great.  His face is numb still, but he is regaining sensation in his low lips.  His color is good and a lot of the bleeding in his mouth has slowed down considerably allowing him to drink fluids now.  He’s a little nauseous but taking meds to curb that.  His swelling doesn’t seem “that bad” to me and he may swell a little more, but Dr. Q agreed that he looks really good.  He should be on ice packs through tomorrow.

Adam took his first drinks of juice and broth this evening.  He is drinking through a syringe with a rubber hose at the end.  This is so that he doesn’t have to suck anything out.  He really can’t drink out of a cup yet.  His jaw is not wired shut but he is wearing strong rubber bands to keep his mouth closed.

Tomorrow, he will start drinking hourly, walking a little and sitting in a chair.

Surgery Timeline and Update

5 a.m. Head to Austin Surgical Hospital

5:30 Arrive and check-in

7 a.m. Surgery begin with about 20 minutes of letting the anesthesiologist do his work

8:55 a.m. First update from the nurse that Dr. Quaroni finished the work on the lower jaw

10 a.m. Second update from the nurse that work on the upper jaw is finished.  Dr. Quaroni will begin sewing him up.

10:45 Dr. Quaroni calls to give the update on how surgery went.

Dr. Quaroni said that the lower jaw was more complicated that he initially anticipated because Adam’s lower jaw was more deformed than what he could tell from the x-rays.  However, he was pleased with the results and said that he was able to get the front teeth to touch (something he wasn’t sure of in the pre-op appointment).  Adam had some bleeding but is doing well.

1 p.m. Nurse calls to say Adam is out of recovery. He has been moved to a room and they are keeping a close eye on him.

Thank you and keep up all the prayers!   The hospital has a wireless connection.  Feel free to send him an email.

To the Hospital

Adam dictated this to me to share:

It’s 5:20 a.m. and we’re on the way to the hospital. We attended mass yesterday at St. Williams. There at the church inscribed beneath an image of St. Raphael, my confirmation saint, is the verse from Tobit:

“Take courage! God has healing in store for you; so take courage!” Tobit 5:10

St. Raphael, pray for us!

Care Calendar

A few people have asked how they can help out while Adam is  recovering.  Our friend Thuy set up a Care Calendar for us at:  www.carecalendar.org

Calendar ID: 6051

Security Code: 6591

Right now it has spaces to sign up to bring meals.  I know there is at least one follow-up appointment that I will have to drive Adam to until he’s ready to drive (i.e. off the narcotic medications).  I prefer not to take the kids to the appointments if I can help it.

Our friend Bianca asked about things Adam does that she and her husband might be able to help with.  Adam distracts the kids while I get things done around the house.  :) So anyone who wants to rough house with the kids or just play and read to them for an hour while I get the household in order is always welcome.  He also does the yard work, in-house tech support and car maintenance.   The cars should be ok; the lawn will need mowing in two weeks, and the new copier may need to be installed if he doesn’t get to it today or tomorrow.   Other than that, he’s my adult contact after a day with the kids, but he’ll probably not be too chatty the first two weeks.

Thank you all for your prayers and support!

The Final Days

T minus 3 days until Adam’s surgery.  We realized today that we have a lot more to do than before Tuesday than we thought.  As I’m writing, he’s mowing the lawn that probably won’t be touched for another 3-4 weeks.

Adam graciously let me cash in on a massage that our God daughter, Lindsey, got me for my birthday a couple of months ago.  It was quite nice indeed.  The best part was that it was upgraded from an hour massage to an hour-and-a-half since the place canceled on us last weekend.

Then after lunch we hit the town getting some last minute shopping done and taking advantage of coupons that would expire soon. So we picked up an all-in-one HP Office Jet printer, copier and fax.  I’m anticipating I’ll great some great use out of it once we start homeschooling in 3 weeks.  We also picked up a new booster seat for Therese.  Our little light weight is still not 40 lbs (actually closer to 30), but these seats start at 30 lbs and go to 100 lbs.  We resigned ourselves today that the days of buying gender neutral stuff without complaints are over.  It was so much easier when it didn’t matter if it was pink or black.  I think the design on the seat is a wee hideous, but she likes it.  When Gianna turns 1 year old in 6 weeks, she’ll get Therese’s current car seat (that’s grey and not that pretty pink flower pattern on the link) and Therese will graduate to her new seat.

Then we went to Spec’s Wine and Spirits to pick up some “spirits” for Adam. There was a nice young lady who was giving out free samples of wine.  And bless her heart, she saw us with the three kids and said, “Awwee… they’re so cute.  I want 10, myself.”  I thought that was pretty cool.  We usually don’t get that response.  So may God Bless this young lady with a holy and righteous husband and 10 beautiful and holy children!

Finally, we went to HEB to pick up some stuff for Adam’s future drinks and all his medication for post-surgery.  At his last appointment with the surgeon, I got the book, “Healing Jaw: A Liquid Diet.”  It has a ton of recipes and how to care for those who have jaw surgery or jaw trauma.   I’ve been reading and re-reading it to find out how to help him care for his jaw and how his new diet is going to work in the coming weeks.  In all honesty, it’s a bit overwhelming.  I made some journal pages as the book suggested to keep track of his daily weight, medications, liquid meal consumption including water, fruits, veggies, protein supplements.  He’ll need to drink something almost every two hours.  It had some great ideas on things to add to “beef up” his drinks by including protein powdered, fortified milk, creams, and fatty broths.  Some of the recipes look good.  Some of the blended meals look, well, not so appetizing to me, but Adam won’t have the luxury to be picky.

Tomorrow Adam still needs to change the oil in the cars.  Monday, Fr. Larry will give him the Sacrament of annointing, and he has another orthodontist appointment before the surgery.

Fulton’s Car Room

One of my “to-do’s” before Adam’s surgery was to paint Fulton’s room.  The paint had been sitting in the garage at the foot of the door into the house as a reminder that his room still needed to be done. So last weekend I started.  I was done by Tuesday afternoon.

I did a “Cars” theme with his.  It’s generic enough that when the Disney flick has run its course, NASCAR will still have a place! In the corners of the room I painted some nuts.  I cut a stencil out and applied the paint with a sponge.  Although the curtains are dark blue, I’m going to hopefully replace those with red ones.  I’m going to pick up some Cars wall stickers and they will go up on the wall when Fulton is fully potty trained.

Literally Inside My Head

This may help some of you get a better idea of why I need orthognathic surgery. This x-ray was taken almost two years ago. You can see that I have an obvious overbite. Also, you’ll notice the fillings on my molars (solid white) do not even come together. I have very few teeth that actually touch when my mouth is closed. My jaw is constantly moving – even at night – trying to find a stable position. Wearing my splint regularly has helped relieve the tension all this movement causes.

Adam’s X-Ray

The orthodontic treatment I have received since this x-ray has corrected some of my alignment issues, but not my bite. Only surgery can do that. After surgery, I’ll continue the orthodontics for a few months to finish out the process. Somewhere in the future I’ll probably need to receive a gingival graft to take care of my receding gums – another effect of my deformed jaw.

A Saint’s Prayer for Her Country

St. Faustina loved Poland, her native land, and prayed for her frequently. She writes in her diary:

Once, after an adoration for our country, a pain pierced my soul, and I began to pray in this way: “Most merciful Jesus, I beseech You through the intercession of Your Saints, and especially the intercession of Your dearest Mother who nurtured you from childhood, bless my native land. I beg You, Jesus, look not on our sins, but on the tears of little children, on the hunger and cold they suffer. Jesus, for the sake of the innocent ones, grant me the grace that I am asking of You for my country.”

Sharon loved this prayer and suggested we pray it often for our own country, especially in the time of another election that will have a tremendous bearing on its future.

Faustina was concerned for the suffering children of her land. I am concerned for those of America who will never get a chance to live. Senator Obama has pledged to sign the Freedom of Choice Act as president. This bill will nullify every bit of pro-life legislation ever passed since Roe v. Wade. Thankfully, McCain will undoubtedly veto it.

It cannot be denied that children are a nation’s hope. I believe it, St. Faustina believed it, and Christ confirms it for in response to St. Faustina:

…His eyes filled with tears, [said], You see, My daughter, what great compassion I have for them. Know that it is they who uphold the world.
