Bridal Shower Reunion

Earlier today I was blessed to go to the bridal shower of our friend Vanessa Garza who lives DC.  Her parents live in the area and we know them well from pro-life circles.   Adam and I were blessed with Vanessa’s friendship 6 years ago when we were courting and she worked for the Office of Pro-Life Activities for the Diocese of Austin.  She’s one of those phenomenal Catholics that never found the right guy, but you knew whoever is the blessed man to marry her, he’s got to be special!

So after 5 years, she’s to marry her match made in heaven.  Her future husband is indeed her “equal.”  He is the vice president for public policy for The Knights of Columbus. He works directly under Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight.   And I think she has one of the most romantic wedding proposals I’ve ever heard. He proposed to her at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome after mass in front of the tomb of St. Peter!  Blessed be God!

Best wishes and many blessings to you, Vanessa and Patrick!

Kindergarten Week 2

I’m so impressed with veteran homeschooling moms!

By Tuesday of this week I was wiped out! Trying to juggle home life –cleaning, cooking, finances, the laundry beast, understanding health insurance– and school requires a lot of energy for me. I certainly feel at the end of the day that I have accomplished a lot.

But we had a good week. We started doing our Five In A Row lessons this week, and we started with The Story of Ping. The way Five In a Row lessons work, is that you read a book for five days in a row and each day you do an extended activity in the area of art, literature, social studies, math or science. On one day, we made a trip to feed the ducks with friends. (No pictures unfortunately, our camera has been shipped to Canon for repairs hopefully.)

Yesterday, I also hosted our first FAMILY MATH morning for Totus Tuus. I think the kids had fun and they were engaged for a good hour or more doing some nice exploratory math for young children. I came across FAMILY MATH in college when I was working with an AmeriCorps program at a local elementary school. We’d host FAMILY MATH night for the parents and children. I love the activities in these books because they teach kids to think and develop strategies. Yesterday, we explore estimation, measuring with non-standard units, symmetry, developing mid-point strategies, understanding and verbalizing greater than and less than, and observing and finding rules for sorting objects. The activities are open ended and the supplies needed are things you already have at home.

You Knew I Would Ask

She: We’re going to visit some friends in Houston next month.
He: So how many tickets for the Cubs-Astros game should I get?

Health Insurance

Sometimes I think explaining the Holy Trinity is far easier than explaining how health insurance works.

Truly, I spent the greater part of the morning on the phone with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas trying to figure out what they mean by “maximum out-of-pocket” a.k.a. “co-insurance stop loss.”  It seems rather simple and indeed something that should be self-explanatory and work in favor of the insured.   The easy definition is as follows:

Coinsurance is expressed as a percentage or pair of percentages generally with the insurer’s portion stated first. The maximum percentage the insured will be responsible for is generally no more than 50%. Coinsurance indicates how an insurer and an insured will share the costs of a bill that exceeds the insurance policy’s deductible up to the policy’s stop loss. Once the insured’s out-of-pocket expenses equal the stop loss the insurer will assume responsibility for 100% of any additional costs.”

What this nice definition fails to mention is that the out-of-pocket expenses are only considered up to the what the insurance company (in our case BCBS) accepts as an “allowable amount” for the medical expense.  If the insured on a PPO goes in-network for a medical procedure, the “allowable amount” for the procedure is agreed upon by the provider (e.g. the doctor) and the insurance company well in advance.  The insured meets the deductible, pays their portion of the co-insurance, and reaches the stop loss without paying unreasonable amounts of money.  HOWEVER, if the insured goes out-of-network (as we did for Adam’s surgery since the doc was the only one in a reasonable driving distance to do this procedure) all bets are off.  The provider can charge what s/he wants. The insurance company, at best, will only still pay the allowable amount for an in-network doctor which is in our case was only 1/5 of the actual cost of the procedure.  AND the deductible, co-insurance, and stop loss (if there is one) is ONLY applied to that “allowable amount,” not the total charges.   The insured can get “balance billed,” as we did, and pay the entire portion the insurance company does not pay.

At the end of the day it all really stinks. But it’s far better than socialized health care.

Kindergarten Week 1

We official started homeschooling this week. It went rather well considering that this was also Adam’s first week back to work full time. It had its challenges as I was trying to find the best time of day and conditions in which to have a great learning experience with Therese. I found that for now, the best time is when Gianna is napping. Fulton enjoys doing some of the lessons with us and for what he’s not quite ready for, I have a bunch of Montessori type work for him (and even Gianna) to do. He quite enjoys playing some of the phonics games, but Therese is just whizzing past the first lessons. She read her first 3 books this week from the BOB Books. These are great little first readers. We’re also trying to get over the hurdle of Therese saying, “I can’t do it.” That has been a whole other challenge that we are working on.

I’m not using a curriculum program such as Seton or Kolbe Academy offers. Instead I chose a variety of resources that I like and some of our friends are using.

Here are some of things we’re using:

Therese is also continuing on with book 2 of the Bastian’s Invitation to Music.

Our homeschooling group, Totus Tuus, met this week for an Olympics fun day. Mrs. Haunsperger read some books with a Chinese theme. The kids paraded around the yard with their flags.

Finally, they did some “balance beaming”…

and some “long jumping”…

and some other “sports” they make their debut in our backyard. Thanks to Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Haunsperger for the great games!

The cutest mess…

…is the first time with spaghetti and sauce!

Welcome to Texas!

Last weekend (sorry I’m late in posting), Marc and Misty came down for a visit to Austin.

mandm_capitol.jpg

They will be stationed at a base in Abilene.  Capitan Dr. Gretencord (or is that Dr. Capitan? or just Dr? or just Capitan? :) )  is practicing dentistry in the Air Force for two more years. She just finished her residency in Omaha.  Meanwhile Marc is looking for a job.  Mini m&m is growing healthy and strong and you can hardly tell that the little one is 20 weeks old here.

As part of the official welcome to Texas and Austin, we took them to the Cathedral for Mass on Saturday and then for a tour of the Capitol.  And no visit to Austin is complete without lunch from Rudy’s BBQ.  Adam enjoyed the cream corn, pureed.

Introducing ViaVivo

As I mentioned about a month ago, I have decided to pursue a start-up opportunity. I am pleased to announce that I am a co-founder and the Director of Technology of ViaVivo, Inc. We are an eLearning development firm focused on creating advanced instructional simulations and serious games.

Our new office is located at the Westpark office complex at Steck and Mopac. We have a few desks, DSL with wireless connectivity, printers, telephone, microwave, small refrigerator, and the all-important coffee maker. And the best part – employees are equipped with all new MacBook Pros! I’m terribly excited to be developing once again on the Mac. Coding is such a joy.

Our first task at hand is to assist a client with a few games going into their curriculum this fall. Afterwards, we’ll take some time to focus on marketing, branding, and strategy – basically the material that will populate our stark Web site: www.viavivo.com. We also have a few other projects waiting in the wings that will need our attention and there’s the outstanding logistical matters that come with starting a new business.

I started going to work full time this week. I’m doing pretty well but usually by 2pm I’m pretty tired and need to head home for a nap. Fortunately, I can continue working afterwards from home. The doctors had given fair warning that healing would take a lot out of me so proper diet and rest is important. My calorie intake has slipped a bit so I’ll need to bring a bit more food to the office.

Once again, I’m very excited about this opportunity and I look forward to sharing more with you all in the future.

P.S.: For those of you wondering, via vivo is latin for “the path of life”.

Exotic and Stuffed Animals

So last weekend we went on the Texas Alliance for Life Family Safari at the Texas Disposal System Exotic Game Ranch and Pavilion.  There are 1600 animals from 30 different species.  Yes, and it was right next door to a landfill…but it was clean smelling landfill.  You wouldn’t know it was there if you were just going by your nose.  The walls inside the pavilion were covered with stuffed animals that either died there on the ranch or were imported in.

Fulton:  “Mommy, mommy, mooooommmmyyy!  Oh look! It’s a bus!”

tal-family-safari08.jpg

On the bus to see the animals on the ranch–just being on a bus was a big adventure for the kids! Oh and where are the buckles (seat belts)?  Big concern for Therese.

And a croc.  Gianna hanging on for dear life!

This was our first outing since the surgery and it was nice to get out!

Two weeks down…

4 to go… of pureed soups for Adam.  His weight has leveled off and perhaps those extra ice creamy milk shakes are slowly adding back the pounds.

Thankfully we received more clarification on the procedure the surgeon is doing on Thursday.  Some of you may remember that Adam had jaw joint surgery about 6 years ago before we were married.  Dr. Nelson, the orthodontist,  said that wearing the rubber bands causes additional stress on the jaw joint and he wants to get Adam off the rubber bands as quickly as possible.  Adam’s two pairs of back teeth that still don’t touch need to be moved together more quickly.  In order to do that, one of the plates on his left side will be cut–not removed entirely.  This will allow those teeth to be pulled down in 3-4 months instead of 6.  The procedure should take less than an hour and Adam will be knocked out.  Dr. Nelson says it’s equivalent to having wisdom teeth remove.  Adam’s will not regress in his recovery but is still on course to continue the liquid diet for another 4 weeks before he can start on mushy food.  His goal–to have a piece of Gianna’s birthday cake!

Overall we’re starting to get back into the groove of life.  Despite what the blog reads, we haven’t totally be obsessing about Adam’s jaw.  The meals that people have brought certainly have helped and made meal time much easier.  Although, I can’t wait until Gianna is a year old and we can add in all those allergy related foods in her diet that are off limits now!!

Therese has been practicing her piano (on her own) and has mastered Bingo and Yankee Doodle.  Perhaps Adam can put up one of the videos or teach me to do it.  (hint hint sweetheart) Yesterday he picked up the next set of piano books.  We’re officially starting school next week and I’ve expanded our school area in what was once our breakfast nook.  I’ll be finishing up this week.  The kids and I are really excited.  Fulton has even expressed interest in learning to read.  (We’ll see if that happens…I won’t be pushing him.) Gianna’s a force to be reckoned with and wanting a part of big sister’s and big brother’s action–much to their dismay at times.  The cutest thing she says is “uh oh” when something falls.  She’s still not sleeping through the night, but sometimes I am! :) She made it from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. today! That was a major breakthrough…and I and her roommate (Therese) just ignored the 4:30 a.m. episode.
