Toy stores

I don’t particularily care for them.   They are eye candy for children. Frankly they overwhelm me and I end up with a head ache when I go to them.   I think most of the toys in these stores support the battery industry and are loud and obnoxious.

However, I found one that I like…Terra Toys–a locally owned and operated toy store in Austin.  I’ve been in a few times in the last week looking for the “perfect” gift.  And I found it…multiple times.  I’m still overwhelmed by the place–everything is just jammed packed to the ceiling.  But most of the toys, games and books in this store don’t require batteries and many of the games are award winning games (i.e. games that are actually educational and stimulate the mind at multiple levels).  They still carry trinkets that I hope never find their way to my house, but a lot of the play toys require imagination and pretend play.  And it’s actually kid friendly.  They have toys in each section for the kids to play with–train table, baby dolls, zoomorphs, plasma car (which Therese remembered from a previous trip and ask to ride today).

So the next time your looking for a toy/game for a child–or even an adult–give it a visit.

Take heed, Gentlemen

Main Street Bethlehem

One event that is quickly becoming a family tradition, is our Advent trip to Burnet to Main Street Bethlehem.  MSB is a living little village of Bethlehem.  It is put on by their local Baptist church the first two weekends of December every year.  The locals dress up and fill the village with life you might see in Bethlehem when our blessed Savior was born.  You walk through the village and can see the black smith hammering away, the stables with real camels, the basket weavers, bread makers and even the pub!  (You just see the pub–don’t get to drink from there.)  They have an inn and at the very end of the city before you exit, you see the bright star and under it a cave and in the cave a man and young woman holding her new born son.  It’s quite beautiful and lovely excursion to keep us focused on and open to the birth of our Lord in the manger in our hearts.

We’re going on the Feast of St. Nicholas this Saturday on the Hill Country Flyer (the train that runs from Cedar Park to Burnet).  The train trip will be an early birthday gift for Fulton.  By the way, get there earlier because it the line is LONG. In past years it takes about an hour to an hour and a half just to get through the line!
