Preparing for Lent

I have really enjoyed the monthly Men’s Prayer Breakfast offered by the Central Texas Fellowship of Catholic Men. This past week Msgr. Michael Mulvey, Vicar General of the Austin Diocese, provided a wonderful reflection on virtues for Lent – particularly patience and meekness.

More specifically though, he spoke about being prepared for Lent. He advised not to wait until Ash Wednesday to start your Lenten practices or penances – rather begin reflecting now on how you would like your season of Lent to be carried out. Start building up a resolution within your heart that you will use this time to grow in holiness.

Msgr. Mulvey said it very succinctly – and I’m paraphrasing naturally – God wants to give you a gift this Lent. Spend this time before Ash Wednesday contemplating on what this gift could be. Then, make your Lenten journey preparing your heart and soul to receive this very gift.
