Walk 2009

Thanks to all who sponsored us for the Texas Alliance for Life Walk 2009. Therese was the “top youth” in the amount of pledges–$1,910. It was just shy of our $2000 goal, but close enough. I was very proud of Therese this year because SHE actually asked people. Not many…and if you weren’t asked personally by her, don’t be offended. She more readily asked people she didn’t know than friends we do. She and Fulton also walked the whole 2 miles. No strollers for us this year…so Muffin also did her share of walking, too. As of last weekend the Texas Alliance for Life raised close to $45,000 so far!

Here are some of our highlights:

Pulling up the rear.

Some wildlife joined us for the festivities!

Some rock climbing.

All of us!

Bishop Aymond to New Orleans

In case you missed the news. We will miss him. He really is an awesome bishop!

Sweet Surprise

Lo and behold after four years I learned today that one of my vines is a red grape.

And there was much rejoicing.

Elbro Nerkte Brown Ale

To finish up my remaining English Ale yeast I brewed up a small batch of Charlie’s Elbro Nerkte Brown Ale.

“A world-renowned and award-winning recipe, heralded for its quick maturity, this favorite brown ale … can be enjoyed within 10 to 14 days!

The addition of crystal and dark grain malts to an already luscious brown malt extract beautifully enhances the flavorful and mildly sweet richness of the brown ale.” -Charlie Papazian, The Complete Jow of Homebrewing

Salvete!

That’s the first Latin word the Therese and her friend Lucas learned today as we embarked on the adventure of learning this new language! (Salve= hello, Salvete = hello to more than one person) We are using the Prima Latina curriculum. Lucas’ mom, Teresa, and I are going to switch off teaching the kids weekly. Since I don’t know latin, I will be learning alongside the children. I’m hoping my Spanish and French background will make learning this easier for me.

The kids started out learning the alphabet, vowels, consonants, vowel pronunciation and six new words. We spent most of the time working on pronunciation of the vowels. I had a game that I used for our English phonics that came in handy. I ended today’s lesson also showing the kids how the make the sign of the cross in Latin. All in all, it went very well. Having a friend to learn with made all the difference in the children’s cooperation.

So, Kindergarten is officially over. That is we made it through all our books. Unofficially, we will be continuing some things. Reading is a must. Our neighbor is a teacher and taught elementary school at one point. So she lent me a bunch of her early reader books. Therese is reading at a mid-to-late- first grade level. We’ll also continue developing some math concepts that need constant refreshing–addtion, subtraction, telling time, and money–be we’ll do them more informally. The kids are also going to continue with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd on Mondays at Teresa’s mom’s house. Their Wednesday class is ended at the church. So the troop will be joining me for Adoration this summer. We had a few challenges this week and spent the hour in front of the tabernacle instead. But it served to start structuring our prayer time with Jesus and we went through the four types of prayer:adoration, penence, thanksgiving and petition. Although it sounds like a lot, I’m looking forward to a more relaxed atmosphere.

The Piles and piles

One thing I don’t like about myself is that I allow things to pile up…literally. If I’m not careful, I can have 2 or 3 piles of mail. You know, the bills and other things I need to attend to but I don’t attend to because I’m too busy sorting through a mountain of mostly junk mail. Where ever I opened the mail or even what “state” they are in determines where that particular pile is. For that reason I hardly check the mail. I’ll get to it three times a month if the mail man is lucky but usually just twice–when I know bills are in there and I think the mail man just can stuff anymore junk into our box.

Then there are the mountains of Therese’s pictures. I just don’t know what to do with them at this point. The trash seems a likely spot, but then I feel bad especially when she sees them there and says, “Mom, when you throw away my pictures you are being disrespectful.” (Yes, I got that once.) So as a consequence, I have two mountains of pictures, one for each level of our home.

Then come the books. I like to read but I just don’t get to the books fast enough. Adam is an avid read and well, you’ve seen the Amazon side bar. Those are his books. So today, in an effort to do some “spring cleaning,” I tried to clear the 4 stacks of books in the house that were 4 to 12 books deep. *sigh* Most of them are my books and Therese’s school books. And where to put them and when to get to them? We’re out of shelf space. Some of our shelves are two layers deep in books. What used to be the children’s 4-shelf toy cubby in the school room is now 2 and half shelves of books–mostly their story books and activity/school books. The irony of course is that I got two books for my birthday to add to the stack. Although I look forward to reading them, I sense it might be a ways down the pipeline.

So before you go buying Catholic books, see if we have them. We just might and you’re welcome to them. One of these days when I’m bored (yeah, right) I’ll make a list and post it as a borrowing library.
