Gospel Humor
“It sounds like you’re reading a literal ‘Divine Comedy’.”
This was my wife’s response to yet another one of my musings from the Gospel of Mark. You may have heard the old adage that “God has a sense of humor.” Well I’ve recently been seeing it in a new way throughout the Gospel in the figure of Jesus. For example, who can’t help but see the lighter side of our Lord knowing he called two of his apostles “son’s of thunder” (Mk 3:17)? And these are the two along with Peter – whom he renamed “rock” – that he often took aside in private matters. I mean, can you imagine how the Lord addressed them? “Hey Rock and Thunder Boys, come with me.”
I’d like to share a few further reflections later as they certainly have been lifting my spirit.

A Catholic friend and I were sharing many possible humors of the bible on day (during class
) A theory we had that Thomas was so doubtful was because the other apostles were always teasing and pulling pranks on him. When Christ had risen they said, “No really, Thomas! He has risen!” Thomas replies, “No way guys! Your trying to trick me like last week when you said there was STILL bread and fish from His miracle! I won’t believe it until I see it!” And then there’s our Lord standing right behind him clearing his throat.
She also drew a picture of a whale making a sickly face and little Jonah inside his belly saying, “Oh, come on! I don’t taste THAT bad!”
Thought I’d share those random moments! Love and miss you!
