Breastfeeding Challenges

Thankfully since we have been supplementing Cecilia, she has been gaining weight at about an ounce a day. But these last few days have been really hard.

Sunday came with a lot of challenges. That afternoon Cecilia didn’t want to nurse. It was devastating for me and left me just crushed. Thankfully the midwives gave me the name of a lactation consultant, Cheryl Haymans, who works for Special Addition Maternity Boutique. I called her several times during the weekend. While I was in tears on Sunday, she finally told me to just pump and give Cecilia a bottle and we set up a consultation with her for Monday afternoon. That night went well. The feedings didn’t last an hour and she got what she needed and I got a little more rest. However, when I started pumping I realized that my right breast is not producing enough milk. Cecilia needs about 2 oz of milk per feeding and my left breast produces 1 oz. but the right only produces a scant amount of milk. This is what we saw when we had the weight gain issues with Gianna when she was 6 months old.

Adam and I realize that life cannot go on this way–with 1 hour feedings. It’s simply too much for our family. And if I can’ t produce enough milk because of a faulty breast then where does this leave us? Yesterday Adam, Cecilia and I met with Cheryl to see how she could help our situation if at all. She was so very encouraging. She actually said that one breast producing less is pretty common. And she said that we need to work up to the sum total of my milk production being sufficient for Cecilia without supplementing. She assessed Cecilia’s tongue and actually found that she has a little tongue tie–that is the membrane below the tongue is too far up causing the tongue not to be able to go out all the way. One of the consequences of this is poor milk supply of the mom and poor weight gain–also poor latch and nipple damage (which we don’t have). Cecilia’s latches were pretty good–but she was also wide awake which is not often the case. And we found that she’s probably getting around 1.25 – 1.4 oz per feeding when she’s fully alert and nursing properly. So we’re hopeful we can get over this hump. And Cheryl was hopeful too since we’re not 6 months down the road like we were with Gianna.

Cheryl wrote us a very detailed plan to get the milk supply up. It means nursing every 3 hours start to start, then supplementing, and pumping for an additional 10-15 minutes. This still makes for an hour feeding. Cheryl is hopeful that if we do this diligently during this week, we can be 100% breastfeeding–no bottles or supplementing– by Monday. Also, today, Cecilia and I made a trip to the ENT and in a couple of short minutes, snip, her tied tongue was fixed.

I will admit this is hard. At best I get 2 hours of sleep at a time. And sometimes its’ so hard to wake Cecilia. Last night it was so hard to wake myself. I miss the other kids too because during the day this really takes 4-5 hours away from them to feed Cecilia. I’m so very thankful that Adam’s mom is here because we certainly could not do this without her being here watching the kids.  And I’m so thankful that we have meals coming because that has been the very last thing on my mind these day.  Hopefully this will work itself out by Monday. If not, I think there will be some serious choices to make for the sake of our family.

Cecilia update

Cecilia is a week old tomorrow.

It’s been a long hard week. The anxiety before Cecilia’s birth has been replaced with sleep deprivation (from having to nurse Cecilia every 2-3 hours), me catching Fulton’s bug on Wednesday and Adam catching it on Thursday. Cecilia lost more than 10% of her body weight at birth (the “allowable amount” by the pediatrician’s books) and had climbing bilirubin levels associated with her jaundice.

When Cecilia’s bilirubin climbed to 15. 6 on Friday from 13.5 on Wednesday, the Birthing Center had to report and we asked them to do so as well, to our pediatrician. He wasn’t so concerned about that as he was that she had not started gaining weight yet and had lost more than 10% of her birth weight (BW= 7 lbs 8.5 oz and dropped to 6 lbs 10.5 oz). Of course he sent our favorite nurse, Kay, to be the messenger of not so good news. She called last night and told us we had to go in for another weight check and bilirubin check this morning and that Dr. Guerrero HIGHLY RECOMMENDED us to supplement with formula. The worse part–if Cecilia continued to lose weight, it would mean hospitalization.

Kay was so sweet and consoling through my tears. She even stopped by last night with formula samples to get us through the weekend and so much support. After 5 years with this doctor and his nurses I was so touched that she was willing to come to our home and help me get through this. We ended up supplementing about an ounce of formula after each feeding last night on top of pumping and hand expressing every spare drop of milk we could. Adam has been such a great help and so wonderful wiping my tears away.

So this morning we had an “urgent care” visit. Cecilia gained an ounce over night. And her bilirubin level is back down to 13.9. Praise God!

I find myself very sad that I can’t make enough milk for my baby girl. God’s way of making me humble once again I suppose. I know that this is such a small cross and I must remember that there are people who would trade this cross for own in an instant and for that I’m even more humbled.

I know that this too shall pass. Please continue to keep Cecilia’s weight gain in your prayers.

Care Calendar and pregnancy update

My friend, Rowena, set up a Care Calendar for our family in anticipation of Baby G’s arrival. Here is the information if you are interested in bringing us a meal in the next 6 weeks.

To access The Gretencord Family’s personal CareCalendar site, visit http://www.carecalendar.org/logon/22700 and enter the following information in the appropriate spaces:

CALENDAR ID      :   22700
SECURITY CODE :   5295
I had an appointment this morning. My blood pressure is 134/84 which is higher than what they would like to see. The cut off when more testing and decisions have to be made is when I reach 140/90. I’m close but I’m thankfully also close to the due date–next Thursday.  My midwife gave me a natural tincture that will hopefully lower my blood pressure and help me relax a little bit. We’ll try that out and in the meantime pray and do all we can to get this baby out! :)
If we haven’t had the baby by next Thursday and my blood pressure reaches 140/90 then we’ll have to get some blood tests done to make sure the baby and I are still okay. We’ll also have to start discussions about a possible induction.
After discussing my recent anxiety attacks with the midwife, she did give me more information on postpartum depression and a few referrals. I’ll look into that if all this persists after the baby is born. I went through 3 months of this when I was pregnant with Gianna and it ceased the day she was born. I’m hoping for the same thing this time.
Mom Gretencord also confirmed today that she will be coming into town on Sunday to give us a hand for the next couple of week. That will be such a help and blessing!
We ask for your prayers that this baby comes out and comes out fast! :) And that I will reach a happy peaceful place in my mental facilities so that my blood pressure lowers and I can get some good rest.

Muffin’s Birthday

Yesterday Muffin turned the terrific two! The family celebrated on Sunday night since Adam and Therese would be at church for their first day of catechesis. One of these days, I’m just going to make icing or whipped cream without the cake for the “birthday cake.”
Gianna Bday 001

We had a pretty low key day since I was still resting up from lack of sleep over the weekend. But it was filled with reading and our friends the Higgins’ who stopped by for lunch.

Gianna got two outfits…one PJ set and this dress pictured below from her Grandma Gretencord. Quite a bit different from Therese, as Muffin opened her gift clothes, she immediately started taking off the clothes she had on to wear her new outfits! It was quite funny to me. I think we’re going to have a girl in love with fashion here!

D minus 9 days

Well, I had a rough weekend. I experienced a severe anxiety attack Sunday evening. My poor beloved husband who has to put up with my pregnancy hormones and pre-birth anxiety! Since last week I had tightness in my back, shoulder and trouble breathing. I’d break down in a heap of crying mush at the most inopportune moments. Why am I anxious? Well, those of you with multiple kids and no family in town know that when you know not the hour or the day of the arrival of your baby, you worry that everything will be taken care of with your other children. Although we have a good list of friends to call at hours of the day and night, I really don’t want to inconvenience someone at 2 in the morning. And of course I hope there are no complications. The midwife I spoke to yesterday morning confirmed that I just have anxiety and need to chill out. She’s right of course. The bathroom and house mess will get done when it gets done. A couple of good friends have already offered to watch the kids so I can get some extra rest–and I’ll take them up on it! And my prayer warriors have already stormed heaven and will be glad to know that all the tightness in my back and shoulder was gone by last night and I got a realitively good night’s sleep.

We also celebrated Muffin’s birthday yesterday. More on that in the next post.

Today we’ll also start our traditional novena to St. Gerard with 9 days left until our Due date (hence D minus 9).

“Getting Organized,” Part II, managing time

Out of Perlot and Hahn’s books that I mentioned in the first part of this series in getting organized, I realized that organization really is individual to the person and their temperament and habits. I’m a morning person. I don’t function very well after 10 p.m. but have no problem getting up early and starting the day. Our kids are also all morning people so far. Adam isn’t. And all this needs to be considered when planning our week.

When I first started making a schedule of our week, I was trying to fit in all the things that sounded good on paper. That didn’t work too well for me. So I decided instead to first write in what we already do. We already have some good routines in place for meals and nap and the times they occur. We also have weekly commitments with our holy hours, and other church commitments and such. So all that went on the weekly schedule first. I just finished our fall weekly schedule and incorporated time we have to be schooling at home, going to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and our Latin co-op. What’s nice is that once it’s on paper, you see just how much time you have for everything else like grocery shopping, extra playdates, running errands. I have this posted by my kitchen sink where I spend a good portion of my day. It also shows you where and how you can make your time more efficient.

I also have a quick view of our weekly calendar. Our computer is upstairs and Adam and I started using Google last year to keep our calendars. It was the best thing we did. We can view each others commitments on one calendar and know when we have something out of the ordinary going on.  My paper version “quick view” of my weekly calendar has one column for each day of the week and rows for: meals, events/errands, kid activities, and chores. So Saturday or Sunday I fill it out and I have my meal plan up there for there for the next week. I have any special events or errands that are happening for Adam and I. Then I have things I need to take the kids to and finally chores that need to do that week that I have to fit in the extra time of my weekly schedule. I have this posted on the fridge next to the stove –my other most popular hang out of the day.

Finally I try not to pack too much in one week. Part of what I like about homeschooling is that I don’t have to be dragging the kids all over the place every day. And in fact I make sure I don’t unless there are special circumstances. I also have learned that there are somethings that I just can’t do for the sake of my sanity and there are some times when I have to tell friends that we just need to go home even though we’re all having a good time at a playdate.

All in all this has been helpful for me so far and we’ll just see what kind of adjustments will need to take place upon Baby G’s arrival!

Dancing

While we’re on the topic of dancing boys:

Yes, we are enjoying the new Flip Video camera.

Texas Flood

So the Lord decided to make up for all the rain we missed out on this summer by sending it all in one weekend. Needless to say, Fulton is excited.
