A Chip off the Old Tub

Last Friday Cecilia was toddling around the bathroom when she fell and chipped both front teeth on tub. We just got back from the pediatric dentist. She broke her teeth pretty significantly. Her upper left front tooth is chipped almost all the way to the nerve. The upper right front is not as bad but still significant.

The dentist is going to monitor it for now and we have another visit in two months. Repairing the teeth would require putting Cecilia under general anesthesia and doing a root canal (since the break was so close to the nerves) and a crowning. For now we’re just going to watch her and those teeth and see what happens over the next few months.

Update on My Sister

While I was in San Antonio, my sister got the latest info on her cancer. As you might remember she was diagnosed with an isolated plasma cytoma back in August and went through 25 days of radiation. Now, she has stage 1 of multiple myloma which is a cancer of her plasma cells. When they gave her bone scan a couple of weeks ago, there were spots on her thigh, arms, and skull. From what I understand this is a rare form of cancer affecting ‘only’ 19,000 per year. There’s no cure, only a treatment.

She will have 4 rounds of  chemotherapy that begin on Dec 1. After her chemo is done, she will have a bone marrow transplant. They will actually harvest her stem cells before the chemo starts, clean them up and give it back to her.  (Blessed be God for adult stem cell research!)

My sister is the strongest woman I know. She’s single but has some great friends who take amazing care of her. Please keep her and my parents in your prayers.

Fabulous Felines

Yesterday we went to the San Antonio Zoo for one of their homeschool programs. This month’s topic is Fabulous Felines. Therese and Fulton went to a 2 hour class that features a presentation by their education coordinator, a short activity, and a tour of the  cats they have on exhibit at the zoo. The best part of course was spending time with my sister. They LOVED the train ride.

Renaissance Field Trips

Last week was field trip week for our little home school. Tuesday we left for Houston to visit our dear friends, the Ceys, and learn more about the Renaissance period since it is part of our history curriculum.

Wednesday we went to the school days of the Renaissance Festival. Thankfully the ‘school days’ are quite a bit more toned down than the regular days which Mrs. Cey and I quite appreciated.  We went to watch the Cast in Bronze (the guy who play an organ like contraption but it plays bells–really  LOUD bells).  We stayed for two minutes and left because it was SO loud and the kids had insisted on sitting in the front. Then we watched the birds of prey and the jousting. We walked about a bit and saw some of the trade skills. I let the kids ride one ride and our day was complete.

Thursday we took the kids to the Houston Museum of Art to enjoy some artwork from the Renaissance period.  Then we enjoyed a picnic and ran over to the Natural Science Museum to watch “Starry Night Express” at the planetarium. It was a perfect movie since both our home schools are studying astronomy as well. Afterward we took the kids to the park to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Thank you to our wonderful friends for hosting us and sharing this adventure with us!!

Dishwasher Rack Repair

When your dishwasher gets to be as old as ours you’ll notice that the racks begin to rust. Replacements cost about half the price of a new dishwasher (at least for our Maytag) which is absurd. I gave Uber Goop a shot. It went on pretty easily and the small bottle went a long way. The hardest part was sanding and filing the rusted areas down to clean metal. The caps were simple to apply and will extend the life of the tines.

Space Shuttle Event

Today we went to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum for a space shuttle event. The celebration kicked off with the unveiling ceremony of an Expedition 20 flight coin, gifted to the Museum by NASA Astronaut Colonel Timothy Kopra—a native Texan—after his summer 2009 expedition to the International Space Station. The gift commemorates Austin’s first-ever live downlink from the International Space Station to the Museum’s IMAX Theatre in August 2009, when Col. Kopra addressed some 300 students and answered questions about science and life in space. The Museum permanently installed the flight coin in the colorful terrazzo floor of the building’s Rotunda.

After the unveiling of the coin we were all invited to go to a free screening of Hubble 3D. At first, the kids were having issues with the decibel level of the movie, but once they got used to it Fulton and Therese were amazed. Muffin continued to be scared of the movie.

Then they had classrooms with some activities for the children to do that taught about flight, lift, and rocket construction. There were also some great robotics demos that the kids could try out.

Trick-or-treat

Here’s our full array of dressed up kiddos. St. Michael, St. Cecilia (after changing her mind from being St. Clare) and St. Rose of Lima. The children had colored and drew pictures of their favorite Saints last week and we used those to decorate the door. One trick-or-treater said she loved all the pictures on our door. :) And several of the kids said, “cool,” when they saw the holy cards we gave them with their candy.

My Little Saints

So one of my goals this year is to learn to sew. My first project–All Saints Day costumes.

(note: Muffin is not pictured because she was having a last minute change of heart on her Saint.)

This year’s All Saints Day picks are St. Rose of Lima and St. Michael the Archangel.

TAL Dinner

I know this is old news.  You’ll see why I’ve been so busy in my next post.

We had a great time with great friends at the Texas Alliance for Life dinner. Abby Johnson was awesome!

Here we are with Sr. Mary Judith and Sr. Mary Jacinta.  Blessing to see them again. Sr. Mary Jacinta hooked me up with some fabulous plays that the sisters wrote on Blessed Imelda Lambertini and St. Tarcisius for their sacrament prep kids that we will hopefully use for ours.
