March for Life

A couple of weeks late in posting–but again, all things cease when germs enter a household with 4 kids!

If you didn’t make it to the March and Rally for Life this year, it was pretty well attended. I think it’s the largest crowd that the Rally has seen. There is a grass roots effort to get 100,000 people there in 2011. I must say the anti-lifers were pretty confrontational this year. They know they are losing. It was wonderful to see so many young people there. One of the speakers made the comment that his usual audience is over 40 EXCEPT at pro-life rallies when the majority of the crowd is under 35.

And of course the Sisters were there! Yay!!!

There was also a nice showing of the St. Louis Young Adults. And Lauren’s extra hands to hold Cecilia!

TAL Dinner Pics

We saw so many friends at the Texas Alliance for Life dinner this year. Thankfully we’re not short on people to ask to sit at our table. We had some new faces this year including three of the Dominican Sister of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, Sr. Mary Jacinta, Sr. Mary Cecilia, and Sr. Mary David.

Women’s Health Forum Update

Today we had our first Catholic Women’s Health and Fertility Forum. We had a good turnout for two weeks of advertising. We had about 30 people there and 5 speakers talking about the Church’s teaching, Fertility Care and Women’s Health, Modern NFP Methods, Osteoporosis and Menopause, Infertility and Fruitfulness in Marriage, and the prevelance of strokes among women. We had tables with information from: Creighton Model, Couple to Couple League, Stroke Scan, Total Health Chiropratic, Weight Watchers, La Leche League, Bradley Childbirth Method, Doulas, Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas, Catholic Bioethics Center, and a bunch of miscellaneous info on Catholic teaching of NFP and contraception.

I walked away with something new from almost every talk. I found some of the new NaProTechnology research to be very interesting. Apparently, there is a lot of information about a woman’s health based on her mucus cycle. And Creighton teachers are starting to learn to ’score’ a woman’s mucus cycle. This score can tell which health risks and procreative risks a woman is more likely to have such as infertility, miscarriage, osteoperosis, etc.  Also one Creighton Model Medical Consultant in Ireland has some interesting findings that link infertility with food allergies and sensitivities.

I found the talk on Infertility and Fruitfulness very profound and beautiful. We live in a society that does not appreciate how a couple can be fruitful outside of bearing or adopting children. Certainly many infertile couples are called to adoption, but not all.  The presenter gave her and her husband’s story on how their infertility has impacted their lives. They’ve always been open to life in their 15 years of marriage but never been gifted with children. They’ve never felt the call to adopt. But instead have put their lives into their ministry work and missionary work with an indiginous tribe in Brazil. And through that, God has blessed their marriage with much fruit through their spiritual parenthood.

I can see a lot of potential for next year with more time to put something together.

Catholic Women Go Green!

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week starts on Sunday.  The Adult and Family Ministry Director at our parish has humored me and is co-coordinating, “Catholic Women Go Green- A Women’s Health and Fertility Forum.” I’m excited where this has taken us! It’s next Saturday, July 25, from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Pastoral Center in Austin. Here’s more information: womenforumflyer

The concept for the forum came from wanting to attract women to “natural” means of addressing health issues–especially their procreative health. Organic has become an ironic trend. Women are willing to pay more money for organic and ‘natural’ foods BUT are still loading their bodies with artificial contraceptives for regulating their fertility and addressing gynecological problems. In addition there are so many misconceptions about natural family planning and its effectiveness.  The Pope Paul VI Institute has made many advances in treating common hormonal problems and has success rates for infertile couples that are upto 4 times greater than invitro fertilization at a fraction of the cost.

This of course is not at all to downplay the role of the Church’s teaching in using NFP as a natural means of spacing children. But since we actually want people to go to this–both NFP users and non-NFP users–we wanted to give a different spin to inform people about the many blessings of NFP. The reality is that most couples won’t go to a forum/talk that explicity has “NFP” in the title. I tried one of those a few years ago and there was almost no one there. Last year the diocese’s NFP coordinator pulled together a seminar on infertility at my suggestion–again to give a different spin to the NFP discussion. We had a great turnout.

So if you’re a women, come!! Invite a friend! Download and email the flier to anyone you think would be interested. Hope to see you there!

VBS

Today was the last day of Vacation Bible School for the kids. We didn’t have it at our parish, but we went to St. Alberts. The kids loved it. The kids learned about a different saint each day, did arts & crafts, and learned songs. Today the kids did a little presentation of the songs they learned and everyone had lunch together.

Unfortunately, my camera batteries died (ughh) before I could get Therese’s group. (I have a request in for a video camera that will probably have to wait until Christmas since the opportunity for Mother’s Day and my birthday has past.)

Here’s her group on stage. This was a nice growing opportunity for her. A opportunity to make new friends and learn in an environment without mom and dad.

Here’s Fulton’s group. Try not to laugh as hard as I did at our son.

On the way to watch and pick up the kids, I was thinking about one of the things I love most about them. You know my kids LOVE you, if when you walk in our house (or other location) and they run up to you, jump on you and/or give you the tightest hug ever while screaming your name. Perhaps there are more civilized ways for kids to great adult friends, but none more loving than this. So when I walked in with Muffin and sat front row center, (and later Adam joined us) Fulton was a little upset that he couldn’t come greet us. Hence the behavior in the video. Ahh…to love so to be rendered mute and know not what to do with yourself! I told him afterwards we should have asked for Fulton Sheen’s prayers for a better performance today!

Walk 2009

Thanks to all who sponsored us for the Texas Alliance for Life Walk 2009. Therese was the “top youth” in the amount of pledges–$1,910. It was just shy of our $2000 goal, but close enough. I was very proud of Therese this year because SHE actually asked people. Not many…and if you weren’t asked personally by her, don’t be offended. She more readily asked people she didn’t know than friends we do. She and Fulton also walked the whole 2 miles. No strollers for us this year…so Muffin also did her share of walking, too. As of last weekend the Texas Alliance for Life raised close to $45,000 so far!

Here are some of our highlights:

Pulling up the rear.

Some wildlife joined us for the festivities!

Some rock climbing.

All of us!

Walk 2009

It’s that time of the year again. We’d like to invite you to join us at the 15th Annual Texas Alliance for Life Walk 2009 on June 6 at The Quarries in Austin.  (If you want to walk there are a couple of other dates for the WALK: June 20 at the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center in Seguin, or June 27 in Sun City, Georgetown.)

Our family will be walking with hundreds of Texans from dozens of churches to promote the sanctity of innocent human life and to raise funds for life-saving programs and agencies in our community.

100% of the proceeds will support these programs and agencies, and all donations are tax-deductible. There are also great incentives for walkers who raise more than $200 in sponsorship pledges — and prizes for the top individuals, churches, pastors, and youth groups!

If you can’t walk with us, please sponsor us–we’ll be walking again with Therese and our goal this year is to break $2000. You can register as a walker or pledge to sponsor a walker (Therese Gretencord) online today at www.TexasAllianceforLife.org. If you don’t want to pledge online, you can email us or leave a comment and let us know the amount you’d like to pledge!

The Joys of Life

Our friends Lauren and Matthew were over today and Lauren made a remark that we haven’t posted anything in a while. So I thought I’d give a little update at the joys of life that have been keeping us busy.

Car Accident: I was in a car accident a week and a half ago. It was really not a big deal except that our hatch and window on the van had to be replace. It was in the Sun Harvest parking lot. No one was injured. God blessed me that the guy with whom this happened was very charitable. I don’t even think his truck incurred any damage. My insurance company was just really great and everyone was really nice in all our conversations. And it turned out that the day it happened, a friend, Kelly, called and she mentioned her husband works for Caliber Collision. So I went with them for the car repairs. I was originally going to get the car fixed at the location on 620 but they wouldn’t see me until May 18, because of all the hail damaged cars. When I told Kelly, she told her husband and he called around the other locations. I ended up taking it to the location on North Lamar and I dropped off the car on Monday and picked it up yesterday. They did a fabulous job and were very timely. If you ever get into a car accident, I would highly recommend them for any repairs.

Gardening: This is probably a no brainer, but if you don’t water your garden, things won’t grow. I somehow always think that Adam should have a green thumb since his dad’s a farmer and all, but that’s not the case. Our gardening experiments in the backyard have been good learning experiences. We have a 2×9 plot based on the Square Foot Gardening. The mix is composed of vermiculite, compost and peat moss which makes for very good drainage…too good. It also means it need more watering than a soil mix, which is what our other two garden plots are. After some extra watering the last week, the seeds are finally sprouting. I ended up transplanting our tomato and pepper plants from the other gardens to this one because they just weren’t growing in the other gardens. I hope they take off. There have been a few days that I sit cursing Adam and Eve! Adam’s grape vines are doing well, but yes, they too require more water. The hops has spouted and my husband is getting all kinds of ideas that I’ll let him tell you about some time.

Homeschooling: Adoremus books had its big Easter sale recently (20% off the order). I like to order our homeschooling materials from there when they have their big sale because I certainly can save a bit if I order all our materials at one time. Of course this means I would have to know what we’re doing next year in terms of our curriculum. So, in a week’s time I had to figure that out else I miss the big sale. I already had some ideas but nothing set in stone. It meant contacting a few friends to see what they’re using and why, and making a trip to Mardel to see some of the stuff they have and be able to actually look inside some of these books. It was also nice to have a serious conversation with Adam about how we want to approach teaching subjects such as history and science. I didn’t choose one curriculum such as Seton or Kolbe. Although I like parts of them, I didn’t like all the materials either offered. In the end, I chose the following:

  • Math: Singapore Math and Family Math
  • Phonics: Phonics Pathways (what we’re using now)
  • English: Seton (for now)
  • Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser
  • Spelling: Phonics Pathways and Zaner-Bloser
  • Religion: Faith and Life
  • History: The Story of the World
  • Science: (oops, I can’t remember…maybe Seton, for now…or was it Science and God’s World?)

Anyway, I got the materials ordered. It looks like I’ll have a nice summer planning before Baby G makes his/her arrival in September.

Other: Our parish had a book sale of old books/movies from the library they are getting rid of. I pick up a few books and a bunch of VHS movies for the kids and us. Now, if there’s a way to convert those to DVD we’re in business.

Our God daughter, Lindsey, accepted a job offer to teach at a middle school as the theater arts teacher in the fall. Yay! She used to work at Dell and was laid off. So this one less unemployed person. She’s going to be great!

Then I mentioned Matthew and Lauren spent the day with us observing famiy life (i.e. playing with the kids). To celebrate the Feast of St. Mark, we made homemade strawberry ice cream. It was SOOOOOO GOOD.

Here’s the recipe:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups strawberries
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Heat the milk on medium heat until hot. Remove from stove. Beat eggs and sugar. Gradually add hot milk. Return to sauce pan and heat stirring constantly until slightly thick (8 minutes). Allow to cool.

In a blender, puree strawberries in the cream. Add this to cooled custard. Stir and add vanilla. Cool in refridgerator. Then crank it out in your ice cream maker.

New Roof

Well, I found out yesterday that our house is going to be added to the over $160 million in damage from the recent hail storm. Although my first inclination was not to call a roofing company or our home insurance, the roofer signs kept popping up ALL OVER the neighborhood and my father-in-law encouraged me to call. So I made the calls a week after the storm.

Bad news: The roof is totaled.

Good news: We only have to pay the deductible for a new one.

I suppose this storm was God’s way of sending a stimulus package to the roofing companies, suppliers, and Mexican laborers. I still think I like God’s stimulus packages better.
