Surgery Timeline and Update

5 a.m. Head to Austin Surgical Hospital

5:30 Arrive and check-in

7 a.m. Surgery begin with about 20 minutes of letting the anesthesiologist do his work

8:55 a.m. First update from the nurse that Dr. Quaroni finished the work on the lower jaw

10 a.m. Second update from the nurse that work on the upper jaw is finished.  Dr. Quaroni will begin sewing him up.

10:45 Dr. Quaroni calls to give the update on how surgery went.

Dr. Quaroni said that the lower jaw was more complicated that he initially anticipated because Adam’s lower jaw was more deformed than what he could tell from the x-rays.  However, he was pleased with the results and said that he was able to get the front teeth to touch (something he wasn’t sure of in the pre-op appointment).  Adam had some bleeding but is doing well.

1 p.m. Nurse calls to say Adam is out of recovery. He has been moved to a room and they are keeping a close eye on him.

Thank you and keep up all the prayers!   The hospital has a wireless connection.  Feel free to send him an email.

Soup’s on!

Three weeks until Adam’s surgery. I know he’s not looking forward to the liquid diet. So I’ve been looking for and cooking up some yummy pureed soups since Saturday. So far we have a little less than a quarter of the deep freeze filled with:

  • Lentil Soup
  • Split Pea Soup
  • Zucchini Soup
  • Tomato Basil Soup
  • Butternut Squash-Apple Soup

I still need to whip up some potato soup and carrot soup. Although these are basic recipes, I found them to be very flavorful and am excited to add them to the “Friday Soup” recipes. To make sure Adam doesn’t wither away, I’ll add cream, powdered milk, wheat germ, baby cereal, and/or a protein powder when I serve it up. I don’t have much experience with protein powders, so if any of you can offer some tips, please do. Also, if you know of any good pureed soups, please let me know. Adam’s going to need variety.

Also in anticipation, I bought 2 gallons of Blue Bell ice cream that I found on sale for milkshakes. Although they said he would, I don’t see my hubby getting tired of milk shakes. In a couple of weeks, I’ll whip up a batch of whole milk yogurt to add to fruit smoothies.

Fourth of July brought some good sales on meat. So I also cooked up and froze about 20 lbs meat including: ham, and chicken and pork fajitas. The ham (and probably the chicken) I could easily grind up and add to a couple of the soups. Everything else I pull out as needed at the end of the day for a quick easy dinner for us. Something tells me I might need that for the first two weeks after his surgery.

Walk 2008

We went on our 4th Walk for Life this past Saturday to help raise money and support the Texas Alliance for Life.  We managed to raise around $1100 this year.  Thanks to all those who supported us with your pledge.

This year’s Austin area Walk2008 was held at the Quarries.  It was a great change from where is was previously held at Pease Park downtown.  There was plenty for the kids to do before the actual walk began.

Enjoying the scenery by the lake…

Walk 2008

It’s coming up on that time of the year.  The Texas Alliance for Life Walk 2008 will be upon us next month.  I’d humbly like to ask for your support again. Last year we raised over $3000 under Therese’s name.  We’d be grateful for any support you can give us to reach our goal of $1000.

To that end, I’d like to invite you to join our family at the Texas Alliance for Life 14th Annual Walk 2008 on June 7 at the Quarries, Austin. We’ll be walking with hundreds of Texans from dozens of churches to promote the sanctity of innocent human life and to raise funds for life-saving programs and agencies in our community.

100% of the proceeds will support these programs and agencies, and all donations are taxdeductible.

If you can’t walk with us, please sponsor us (under Therese’s name). You can register as a Walker or a Sponsor at www.texasallianceforlife.org.

For the out-of-staters, you can still sponsor us.  States that promote and adopt pro-life legislation and win court cases in upper levels of judicial courts (like Texas has done)  have a huge impact on other states.  And a life saved and nurtured in Texas is another soul for God and His kingdom!

Congratulations Dr. Cey!

Our great friend Brad defended his Ph.D. dissertation in geology at UT today—and he passed!  Blessed be God!  Way to go Dr. Cey!  As one of his sweet daughters would say, he officially “knows a lot about rocks!”

It’s hard to believe it’s been four and a half years since they came to Austin.  And it was by God’s providence and grace that we were blessed with their friendship.

We are very proud of you.  But I know, not nearly as proud as your lovely wife and daughters are.  Congratulations and all God’s blessings to you!

Rodeo Tour

Thanks to the planning of our friend Misty, we went on a tour of the rodeo this morning.  Our group’s name was “Catholic Family Homeschoolers.”

Although the kids’ attention span was only slightly better than a fruit fly, they had a good time looking at the cows, tasting the biscuits and eating free ice cream!

Rite of Election

Yesterday, the Candidates and Catechumens from were presented to the Bishop for the Rite of Election.  The Elect are those adults who are seeking to enter into the fullness of the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

Gianna and I accompanied our sponsoree, Lindsey, for the Rite of Election.  The Bishop greets EACH Catechumen and Candidate in the Diocese and “welcomes her to the family.”   It was really awesome to see so many adults choosing to come into full union with the Church.

During this Lenten season, please pray for them–and especially Lindsey.

Rally for Life

Today we joined thousands of other Texans at the Rally for Life sponsored by the Texas Alliance for Life to remember the over 40 million babies who have died since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion.  We continue to pray for an end to this crime and the healing and conversion of those have taken part in it, especially the mothers and fathers of these children.

We were pulling up the rear; so most of the people who marched down to the Capitol were in front of us.  There was an awesome turn out and the weather couldn’t have been any better!  It was so nice to see so many of our friends too.  Kudos to Alexis who works for TAL and all the hard work she did to make this happen.

Some parishioners from St. Catherine of Sienna parish made the signs that you see Therese holding.  What a great idea for the children to carry since they can identify with the picture of the Holy Family and especially the baby Jesus. Below the image it says, “Embrace the Culture of Life.”

Biscuit Brothers!

I LOVE the Biscuit Brothers!  And the kids and I were able to see them this morning before a downpour of rain at the Children’s Art Park Day.

The ”instrument petting zoo” is a fun place for the kids to see different instruments up close.

The Biscuit Brothers were very fun to see live.  They are kid-people.  They came out before the performance and mingled with the parents and kids.  Our friend Teresa got some great pictures with her kids and the brothers.  My children, however, were too busy with their popsicles to care that Buford Biscuit was right next to us!

If you missed them today, they will be at Central Market on North Lamar on Wednesday, Aug 1, at 6:30 p.m.  They will be signing their new CD and playing some tunes.  Hopefully it won’t be rained out that day. Maybe we’ll see you there!
