Good Shepherd

Last Sunday was Good Shepherd Sunday. For a real treat, read Ezekiel 34 where God is expressing his disappointment with Jewish leaders who had failed in their responsibility and what he would do about it:

“For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep.” Ez 34:11

Then re-read the Gospel from John 10. Promise fulfilled:

“I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.” Jn 10:14

Therese’s First Communion

Saturday Therese made her first holy communion!
Wow! We had the most amazing weekend! God was so generous in the graces He showered upon us.
Friday was the feast day of Bl. Imelda Lambertini, the patroness of first communicants and Our Lady of Fatima. We went down to the cathedral for the last home school mass of the year. Before mass the first communicants began the rosary and all the families led the living rosary. There was a great turn out from the families. Afterward, the families processed out and crowned the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in. The prayer garden.

Saturday, we started the day with our usual morning mass at St. Louis. Months ago I had arranged that this mass be said for Therese’s  intentions. It was wonderful. Fr. Oliver prayed for her on this special day during the prayers of the faithful. After mass we all hopped in line to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Afterward Therese spent some time praying in front of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the same image to which Fr. Tim consecrated her seven years ago after her baptism.

The vigil mass was so perfect. All the first communicants sat in the front pews together. Because we were the catechists for her class, we were able to sit with her. That itself was a gift worth the sacrifice of having taught the class for the last nine months. I didn’t know this before mass, but this weekend was Good Shepherd Sunday! As the Psalm 23 was sung, I almost started crying…and when the Gospel was read, Therese and I shared a smile and moment of silent awe and joy of the gift unfolding before us. You see, Therese has spent the last 4 years in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and she knows The Shepherd well. We have been celebrating the Garden of the Good Shepherd book and readings this Easter as a family and she just finished memorizing part of John 10 on the good Shepherd–which was the gospel reading this Sunday. God is so good!

After she received communion, she was beaming with such joy! She was so beautiful!

We were blessed to have her Grandma Gretencord, Aunt Mary, Uncle Marc and Aunt Misty,  her God parents and many friends celebrate this weekend with us. Thank you all for the gift of your Christian witness to our children!

First Holy Communion Novena

Yesterday Therese and I started the Little Lamb  of Jesus First Holy Communion Novena. The very special thing about this novena is that it is with St. Therese of Lisieux. Therese is so excited! Only nine days from now she will join us in receiving Jesus at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

We had rehearsals for the Mass earlier this week. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to sit together as a family. :( But because we are her catechists, Adam and I will be able to sit with her at Mass.

We are looking forward to next weekend. Friday is the feast of Blessed Imelada Lambertini who is the patron saint of first communicants. Saturday morning’s mass will be said for her intentions. Then Saturday evening at the vigil Mass there will be no more tears of sorrow at having to wait to receive our Blessed Lord! (And trust me, there have been many tears.)

Please keep her in your prayers these next 9 days. If you are so inclined to, please send her a note (email or snail mail) letting her know of your prayers and support.

Easter Celebration

He is risen, Alleluia!

We had a great start to our Easter season. We went to all the Triduum services. The kids were really excited about going to everything thanks to the Truth in the Heart explanation of each of the services. When they were given the choice whether to go to the Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday Mass with an Easter egg hunt at the church, they chose the Vigil without hesitation. They’re great kids. They are definitely at the right age and training that they did great at all the Masses. At Easter vigil it was also great to see at least 3 other families with kids the same age as our kids who are regulars in our seating area at the regular Mass we attend. After Vigil we came home and enjoyed some yummy ice cream. Sunday morning Adam and kids opened their Easter basket. The big kids got analogue watches and the little kids got the pre-reader BOB books. They all get to share a new Glory Story cd on St. Martin de Porres and St. Clare, and the “Can you find the disciples of Jesus?” book. Then we  made the Resurrection Rolls. We had our family egg hunt. And finally we had an Easter feast with friends.

Our domestic church has undergone the Easter transformation as well. The colors in our house changed from purple to white. The images changed from those of the passion to the Divine Mercy image, our Easter banner,  a photo of St. Gianna (whose feast is Thursday), and images of soon-to-be-Blessed John Paul II. The Lenten Cross on our dining table was replaced with our Paschal candle. Our evening prayers changed from the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary, stations of the cross, and the Lenten cross readings to the Divine Mercy Chaplet (from Good Friday to this Saturday), the glorious mysteries of the rosary, and our Garden of the Good Shepherd readings.

Holy Week and Easter Resources

Holy Week is almost upon us and soon the great celebration of Easter!! This is one of my favorite times of the year.

Here are some old and new resources we’re using in the house to prepare for these great celebrations.

Chat Chat, An Extra Special Easter Vacation Our kids love this Catholic audio show with a bunch of Catholic chat. It has  great songs and lots of wonderful information.

Truth in the Heart Season III of the 2nd grade series is all about Holy Week. I love the Sisters. We have two other seasons, but this one has 6 episode all about Holy Week: Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil. It explains all the sights and sound and was a great resource when we had to teach our RE kids about the Triduum.

Glory Stories Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary We love the Glory Stories about the saints. I orders some things for Easter for our kids and we received a free CD of the Sorrowful Mysteries. I listened to it this morning and it was awesome! It’s a scriptural rosary for kids. They all have the Stations of the Cross. We don’t have it, but I may invest in that for next year.

Footprints of God, Jesus This is more geared toward adults, but our kids love Steve Ray and enjoy the video series.

For the Easter season, we are looking forward to enjoying the Garden of the Good Shepherd by Tomie de Paola and celebrating the Easter season with garden parties each week with the set of readings.

The Blessing of the MBOC

The Mystical Body of Christ(MBOC) is a wonderful, amazing blessing. All of our intimate friends share at the Lord’s Table with us every Sunday. Not always at the same church or the same town, but we are all connected–we are all one–in the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a gift. But of course, the best part of the gift comes when you unwrap it.

Through the years we have enjoyed unwrapping this gift over and over as we meet new families that come to our parish, or we say good-bye to great friends who move away and our friendship continues to bloom across the distance. We make memories celebrating the great feasts of our Church or celebrating the blessings of our families in the ordinary days of our lives. We support each other when we need it. We are honest and build each other up when we need that too. We share our lives and our families.

Yesterday at Mass, the kids and I were sitting in the front pew and Adam had to serve as an alcolyte. Our friend Peter was  behind us (and his wife was in the back with the baby) and another family we have recently gotten to know was to our right. And actually it was just the dad, Ryan, and the two older girls (ages 4 and 5) because his wife was in the back with their baby.  During the Eucharist prayer, Fulton had to go to the bathroom. Rather than parade (because that’s what it would have been) all four kids out from the front row, I took him and the baby and asked Peter to keep an eye on Therese and Muffin. We managed to come back by the beginning of the Agnus Dei. But as we were coming back, Ryan left with one of his girls, leaving the other in the pew by herself. So the time to go to communion came and Ryan hadn’t returned. Thankfully his daughter knows us (and loves Therese) and so she went up with our family. Holding up the communion line for a couple of minutes, there I was blessed with these 5 wonderful children. And in that moment I felt truly blessed that we know, trust, and are at ease with the people sitting around us in the pews at church to step in and help one another with our children.

I have to play ‘single parent’ today and tomorrow as Adam is busy with a work project and unavailable to us. In a semi-disastrous and challenging moment taking the kids to class at church today, our dear friend Elizabeth who’s baby I watch once a week gave me a much needed hug and later her husband called to invite themselves to bring us dinner tomorrow night.

These are the  sweet gifts of our friends in Christ. Thank you friends!

First Communion Preparations

Last week was a busy week for Therese. She was very blessed to participate in a 4 day retreat for the first communicants in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). About ten kids who participate in CGS at several locations in town came together for this amazing retreat. We could never offer such an experience for the children in our RE class at our parish for several reasons, so we were delighted that she had this opportunity. She had a great time and she continues to be so very excited to receive Jesus. Next weekend we have the retreat for the children in our RE class. Her First Communion mass will be in May.

I also managed this weekend to get all her attire together for the occasion. Let me tell you that it was very overwhelming to look at all the hundreds of extravagant dresses with very large price tags. All i wanted was a nice simple, modest dress that maintains her dignity and that of the Sacrament. And our blessed Lord was so generous to help us find a lovely dress at Costco of all places for a very small price. It was the very last one on the rack. It even has white roses on it as she had requested. I used my Hobby Lobby coupon and I bought the toole and headpiece to make her veil. And
I found some simple white ballet flats at kohls on sale. For all of this and some white dress socks (since it would be a near occasion of sin to make her wear tights) the total was a little less than $50. Adam was especially thrilled about this! And Therese is so happy with everything and her opinion really matters.

Lenten Graces

We have had a crazy busy month…again. In the midst of the craziness, we’ve had a very prayerful Lent so far.

We started out with our pre-Lenten Mardi Gras party. We had some friends over for Cajun food, beer, music and good times. On Ash Wednesday, we brought out many of the ‘old’ traditions of baking pretzels on Friday and delving deep in scripture with our Lenten Cross. We picked up the other wooden Lenten cross that a local homeschool co-op was selling last year.  The kids are far exceeding their prayer promise. I decided we needed to get back into the daily family rosary. And in an effort to start off with baby steps, I told the family we are praying an after dinner decade every night. Much to my joy the kids want to say the WHOLE rosary. That is such a gift and one for which I am very thankful. Last night we had a friend over for dinner and we ended up only praying a decade because it was getting late. She said, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard kids whine that they couldn’t pray the WHOLE rosary instead of  only one decade.” On Fridays, instead of the rosary we pray the Stations of the Cross. The kids helped me make a Station of the Cross basket with 14 items to remind them of each of the stations. We light 14 candles and after each station one of the kids gets to blow it out. Last Friday was a little eventful when one of the children was playing around (instead of sitting down) and accidentally set an article of clothing on fire.

I have very much enjoyed my night time spiritual reading so far, too. I finished A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken. Beautiful and very moving book about beauty, spousal love, conversion, mercy, and the love of God. It was very interesting to read many of the personal letters that were exchanged between Vanauken and C.S. Lewis. Then I moved onto something a little less emotional…Memorize the Faith by Kevin Vost. It is about memorizing key points of the Catholic faith using memory techniques of St. Thomas Aquinas and other ‘medival memory masters.’ It’s actually pretty cool. I can’t wait to use these techniques on the kids!

My morning spiritual reading has been just as great. Thanks to St. Jose Maria Escriva, I’m conquering my laziness and rolling out of bed early in the morning to pray and hopefully grow spiritually. I’m breaking open the word through the Catholic Letters (the books of James, Peter, etc) using the Navarre bible…love it! You just can’t go wrong with the Navarre. And I’m FINALLY making my way through Fulton Sheen’s Life of Christ. I’m hoping I can get to the chapters on the passion by Holy Week. We shall see.

End of the Bible Adventure

Last night we had our last Bible Adventure study. We had a themed dinner party. Everyone was supposed to dress up in the color of their favorite time period and then they were to make a food for that time period.  Here were some of the dishes we had for each time period

  • Early World–Apple Sauce–for fruit that Eve and Adam ate–Fulton chose this one
  • Patriarchs–Roasted goat–for all those brunt offerings–I chose this one because of Abraham’s great faith
  • Egypt and Exodus–Pomegranate Italian Soda–for the color of the Red Sea
  • Dessert Wanderings
  • Conquest and Judges–honey for the Land of Milk and Honey
  • Royal Kingdom–hummus with Kalamata olives (to make it purple)–the Anderson’s chose this one.
  • Divided Kingdom–
  • Exile–blueberries–Gianna chose this one. Baby blue is the color of the time period
  • Return–Lemon squares—Therese chose this one because the story of Ester falls in this time period and the color is yellow
  • Maccabean Revolt–carrot souffle and also sweet potatoes–Adam and the Politos chose this time period and the color is orange.
  • Messianic Fulfillment–bread, grapes and wine–Mr. Molchen chose this one.
  • The Church–also the bread–Mr. Molchen said when you break open the bread you get the Church!

It was great reflecting on the things that stood out to us and the new things we all learned and even the things we want to learn in the future. Some of the themes that came up were:

  1. Finally understanding the Divided Kingdom and the Exile;
  2. Seeing that God has always been the same in His mercy and love–that is the idea of the Old Testament God being one of judgement and wrath was thrown out the window when we ‘learned the story;’
  3. understanding now how the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New and more the symbolism of why Jesus chose certain places and times to do and say things in his ministry;
  4. understanding how the Mass reading fit together!

First Reconciliation

Therese made her First Reconciliation tonight. (Can you see the post Sacrament glow on her?)

Adam and I took on 16 spiritual children this year teaching her class at our parish. We have been working with them since mid-September to prepare them for this day. It was so awesome to see the kids just beaming and glowing in God’s grace, love and mercy. Next we start working on First Communion.
