My Blessings

I don’t have a perfect family, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world!

After mass on Saturday, Adam picked up some beautiful flowers for me. Later that afternoon he helped me get our Kitchen Mill that my best friend handed down to us. She also gave us a 25 lb bag of wheat berries. There were no excuses anymore for it to sit in the pantry. So we made flour and some amazing bread on Saturday. Adam knows grinding my own flour has been on this year’s list of goals and he was so great to help me meet that goal.

The kids made me some sweet mother’s day cards and pictures and I got the book, “My Mom is So Smart,” by Tomie de Paola.  Therese even made her own version of that book for me. We enjoyed naps and part of the afternoon at the park. The selfish part of me was disappointed there was no breakfast in bed, but Adam got up extra early on Monday to make homemade cinnamon rolls for me. I am blessed to have such a great family.

First Holy Communion Novena

Yesterday Therese and I started the Little Lamb  of Jesus First Holy Communion Novena. The very special thing about this novena is that it is with St. Therese of Lisieux. Therese is so excited! Only nine days from now she will join us in receiving Jesus at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

We had rehearsals for the Mass earlier this week. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to sit together as a family. :( But because we are her catechists, Adam and I will be able to sit with her at Mass.

We are looking forward to next weekend. Friday is the feast of Blessed Imelada Lambertini who is the patron saint of first communicants. Saturday morning’s mass will be said for her intentions. Then Saturday evening at the vigil Mass there will be no more tears of sorrow at having to wait to receive our Blessed Lord! (And trust me, there have been many tears.)

Please keep her in your prayers these next 9 days. If you are so inclined to, please send her a note (email or snail mail) letting her know of your prayers and support.

CCSA Concert and Awards

The kids had their first CCSA concert at a nursing home this morning. The kids did great and the people from the nursing home really enjoyed the children.  Afterward, there was a little award ceremony. Fulton received the “Devil-may-care” award for his contagious laugh and happy-go-lucky manner. Miss Kathy sure does have him pegged! Therese got the “Holy Mouth” award for all the holes she has in her mouth from teeth falling.

Easter Celebration

He is risen, Alleluia!

We had a great start to our Easter season. We went to all the Triduum services. The kids were really excited about going to everything thanks to the Truth in the Heart explanation of each of the services. When they were given the choice whether to go to the Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday Mass with an Easter egg hunt at the church, they chose the Vigil without hesitation. They’re great kids. They are definitely at the right age and training that they did great at all the Masses. At Easter vigil it was also great to see at least 3 other families with kids the same age as our kids who are regulars in our seating area at the regular Mass we attend. After Vigil we came home and enjoyed some yummy ice cream. Sunday morning Adam and kids opened their Easter basket. The big kids got analogue watches and the little kids got the pre-reader BOB books. They all get to share a new Glory Story cd on St. Martin de Porres and St. Clare, and the “Can you find the disciples of Jesus?” book. Then we  made the Resurrection Rolls. We had our family egg hunt. And finally we had an Easter feast with friends.

Our domestic church has undergone the Easter transformation as well. The colors in our house changed from purple to white. The images changed from those of the passion to the Divine Mercy image, our Easter banner,  a photo of St. Gianna (whose feast is Thursday), and images of soon-to-be-Blessed John Paul II. The Lenten Cross on our dining table was replaced with our Paschal candle. Our evening prayers changed from the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary, stations of the cross, and the Lenten cross readings to the Divine Mercy Chaplet (from Good Friday to this Saturday), the glorious mysteries of the rosary, and our Garden of the Good Shepherd readings.

Prayer Request for My Sister

I want to ask you to please pray for my sister these next two weeks. She will begin her pre-op for her bone marrow transplant starting this Friday and in two weeks will have her bone marrow transplant.

St. Peregrine, pray for us!

Here is what she wrote in her last update.

Friday April 15, 2011 I will begin to get injections, this will go on for 3 days.. These injections are to prepare the stem cells to be mobilized. Which means it causes the stem cells to come out of my bone marrow into the blood stream. Also on this Friday I will have all the test done like in Dec to test my major organs to make sure they are functioning properly.

April 18th .. I will have more injections and a catheter placed in my neck.

April 19th and 20th… more injections and the collection of my stem cells in Cytapheresis (which is a procedure in which various cells can be separated from withdrawn blood and retained, with the plasma and other formed elements retransfused into the donor.) This will be done through the catheter in my neck.

Once the stem cells that are collected the are stored into infusion bags and frozen until the completion of the preparative regimen.

I will then have Chemo to kill the remaining cancer cells and make space for the new cells to live. My immune system will be completely wiped out. This chemo will cause my appearance to change. I will lose my hair and properly lose weight, get mouth sores etc…. and be moody.. so please bear with me.

April 27th .. I will be admitted into the Bone Marrow transplant Unit.

April 29th .. the Transplant will take place…. which is the previously collected stems cells will be thawed and infused back into my blood stream.

Then it is healing time….building up my strength and immune system. Which will be around a month.

During this whole time before my hospital stay, I will be making daily visits to the hospital. (My mom will be taking me.) I will of course need to watch being around sick people and most people for the time being and masks will need to be worn. There will be a selective few friends and family who will come by and help my mom and check on us.

Once this is all done and I am in remission I will then have to have all my baby shots again. The immunization shots, the nurse said it would be like I was reborn.. I would need to build up my immune system and would sick very easily.

Am I a little nervous.. yes …am I a little scared.. yes…But I know God is looking over me, and it is in his hands. With his help and help of the Doctors, Family and Friends I will be just fine. I was hoping the back pain would go away before I started the transplant, it hasn’t, the injection in the back I had last week helped very little.

The Blessing of the MBOC

The Mystical Body of Christ(MBOC) is a wonderful, amazing blessing. All of our intimate friends share at the Lord’s Table with us every Sunday. Not always at the same church or the same town, but we are all connected–we are all one–in the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a gift. But of course, the best part of the gift comes when you unwrap it.

Through the years we have enjoyed unwrapping this gift over and over as we meet new families that come to our parish, or we say good-bye to great friends who move away and our friendship continues to bloom across the distance. We make memories celebrating the great feasts of our Church or celebrating the blessings of our families in the ordinary days of our lives. We support each other when we need it. We are honest and build each other up when we need that too. We share our lives and our families.

Yesterday at Mass, the kids and I were sitting in the front pew and Adam had to serve as an alcolyte. Our friend Peter was  behind us (and his wife was in the back with the baby) and another family we have recently gotten to know was to our right. And actually it was just the dad, Ryan, and the two older girls (ages 4 and 5) because his wife was in the back with their baby.  During the Eucharist prayer, Fulton had to go to the bathroom. Rather than parade (because that’s what it would have been) all four kids out from the front row, I took him and the baby and asked Peter to keep an eye on Therese and Muffin. We managed to come back by the beginning of the Agnus Dei. But as we were coming back, Ryan left with one of his girls, leaving the other in the pew by herself. So the time to go to communion came and Ryan hadn’t returned. Thankfully his daughter knows us (and loves Therese) and so she went up with our family. Holding up the communion line for a couple of minutes, there I was blessed with these 5 wonderful children. And in that moment I felt truly blessed that we know, trust, and are at ease with the people sitting around us in the pews at church to step in and help one another with our children.

I have to play ‘single parent’ today and tomorrow as Adam is busy with a work project and unavailable to us. In a semi-disastrous and challenging moment taking the kids to class at church today, our dear friend Elizabeth who’s baby I watch once a week gave me a much needed hug and later her husband called to invite themselves to bring us dinner tomorrow night.

These are the  sweet gifts of our friends in Christ. Thank you friends!

NASA Space Week

It’s NASA Space Week! Today NASA representatives were at the Capitol and we enjoyed the afternoon learning about space exploration. The kids made sundials, learned about renewable energy, saw a scale model of the ISS, and did a ton of fun activities. This came at the right time because the next and final chapter in our astronomy book is about space exploration and beyond. Fulton really made the day a lot of fun. He was ready and willing to try everything. Therese not so much…it took a little coaxing. But I’m sure the only thing Fulton will remember is the free Amy’s Ice Cream!

I love NASA! Now we just need to make it to Houston to visit the Johnson Space Center!

Note of thanks to Mr. Anderson who graciously stayed with the Gianna and Cecilia so that I could take the big kids. Gianna woke up with a fever this morning, and it was Cecilia’s naptime when we left. This might also be the end of our field trip run unfortunately if a bug has hit the household.

Mayborn Museum in Waco

Today we met up with Fulton’s God parents in Waco at the Mayborn Museum. That has got to be my favorite local children’s museum. It was great to see our friend and our God son. The kids had a great time despite having to eat lunch outside in the cold.

There were discovery rooms with animals and insects; physical science; earth science (with a really cool tornado); the mammoth excavations; anatomy; sound; optics; simple machines; play cars; bubbles (which I would recommend bringing a change of clothes). It was a great time. It was hard to leave.

Wetlands

A couple of weeks ago we had our March homeschool day at the zoo. We stopped by to see my sister at her house as she had just had surgery to remove the screws from her back. We took her some frozen meals to help ease some of the stuff she has to do.

Then off to a hot and crowded spring day with the smelly animals. This week it actually did smell like a zoo. They had a new exhibit open and two older exhibits that were under constructions were open again. The kids studied wetlands. ‘I’ actually learned a few things about wetlands as well.  They saw a salamander up close and got to feed the ducks and fish. Then we went to the Fun Farm petting zoo. Therese didn’t want to have anything to do with the goats. Muffin, Fulton and Cecilia however quite enjoyed them.

My Niece’s Quincenera

My oldest niece turns 15 today. Last Saturday, Autumn, had a quincenera. Apparently this is what her group of friends is into and her parents threw her one. Unfortunately it wasn’t at a Catholic church, BUT it was very well done and the minister did a fine job preaching the call of young people –especially her– to holiness, integrity, purity, and faith. At the end of the service she gave her pledge of purity and one of the gifts she received was a chastity ring. She ask Adam and I to be the sponsor of the bible and we got her the RSV translation of the Catholic Youth Bible by St. Mary’s Press. It’s really an awesome bible and has a lot of great apologetic information in there.

She’s a beautiful young lady and not just on the outside. She has a very lovely and generous heart. When we  visit, she is always so attentive to the kids and they love her. And she’s so down to earth. Happy Birthday, Autumn!
